Manchester United fans collectively booed Erik ten Hag's controversial decision to swap Rasmus Hojlund with Anthony Martial against high-flying Brighton.

The Red Devils splashed out £72million to sign the Denmark international in this summer's transfer window and he found the net in the first half against the Seagulls, only to see the effort ruled out following a VAR check.

Hojlund continued to be a threat in the second half as Man United conceded twice at Old Trafford, but on 64 minutes Ten Hag decided to remove the striker from the action and replace him with the out-of-form Martial.

The decision went down like a lead balloon, with Red Devils supporters booing and jeering while a stressed Ten Hag looked on.

Michael Dawson said on Soccer Saturday: "The Manchester United fans have had something to say because Rasmus Hojlund has just been taken off for Martial and they voiced their frustration with boos because they weren't happy that he was taken off."

Brighton took the lead at Old Trafford thanks to former United star Danny Welbeck, who slotted home from a Tariq Lamptey pass.

Man United thought they'd equalised shortly after when Marcus Rashford picked out Hojlund to fire home, but VAR showed the Englishman had taken the ball out of play before he'd found his teammate.

Pascal Gross made it 2-0 after the break, not long before Hojlund was replaced by Martial before Joao Pedro put the fixture to bed.

Hannibal Mejbri netted seventeen minutes before the end to give United something of a lifeline, but disappointed home fans have already started leaving the stadium.

Former United defender Paul Parker recently hit out at Ten Hag opting to use Martial over his new signing Hojlund, saying he should face the sack if he doesn't start playing the Dane.

"If he doesn't start against Brighton, then all fans will want Erik ten Hag fired, and it would almost be justified," he told SpilXperten. "It wouldn't make any sense if he started on the bench.

"Martial shouldn't even be on the bench. There must be a youth player who is better and can sit on the bench, and Hojlund can be the first striker. All Manchester United fans are fed up with seeing a player with a lousy attitude, who always sulks and complains, and it's a blessing that Man United finally has an attacker who plays with enthusiasm.
