A bus driver who scooped a lottery jackpot prize has made a special donation after quitting his job.

James Keown, a Kentucky bus driver, won a life-changing sum of $100,000 (£80,630), prompting him to quit his job to enjoy some down time and luxuries after his years of hard work. However, the 71-year-old - who continued working 13 years after retirement - has gifted some of his winnings to an amazing cause.

Firstly, James didn't want to forget the store owner who sold him the ticket and has decided to give him a slice of his lottery winnings - along with an animal shelter due to his and his wife's love of animals and the help rescue centres give to animals like their own blind cat. The couple are also looking into buying a new home by the lake.

James wife said: "We do have a special place for special needs animals. We feel those animals often get overlooked". Speaking after his win, James said: "I called my boss on Sunday, and I told him, ‘I hit the lottery and I’m not coming back.’… I loved my job, but I’d been thinking about retiring for a while."

James won the big prize after his winning ticket matched four white ball numbers and the Powerball to win the $50,000 prize. Luckily, James had added the Power Play opinion on his ticket that doubled his winning sum. He said: "I thought, ‘I better see what I won.’ The first time, I saw I won $50,000 and then I thought, ‘Wait a minute, I play the multiplier all the time,’ so I went back, and the multiplier was 2."

The bus driver's wife Monta was also overjoyed at their good fortune and said she was "over the moon and excited for him." Monta added: "We had just gotten off the phone, and then he texted for me to call him as soon as I could. I panicked thinking something was wrong. He told me, ‘I just paid off my bills.’ I said, ‘You did what? ‘I just paid off my bills. I just won $100,000!’."

It comes after one of the largest lottery prizes in US history was won last month when a Mega Millions prize of an incredible $1.58billion was claimed in Florida. A Publix grocery store in Neptune Beach sold the winning ticket, according to the Florida Lottery.

“These individuals are going to perhaps contact a lawyer, contact a financial adviser and make sure they get their ducks in a row,” secretary of the Florida Lottery James F Davis told The Associated Press. “Because as you know when you are a winner you have an opportunity to be able to make such a difference in so many individual lives.”
