Hollyoaks fans were left emotional on Thursday as Donna-Marie Quinn, played by Lucy-Jo Hudson, left the hit Channel 4 soap after five years.

Only recently, Donna-Marie has been grieving for her daughter Juliet Nightingale, who passed away in June after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis. Donna-Marie, who was a recovering addict, has fallen off the wagon since her daughter's death and Leela Lomax kicked her out as a result.

Before leaving Hollyoaks for good, a crying Donna-Marie, who first stepped foot in Chester back in 2018, spoke with son Romeo Nightingale in a heartbreaking moment. She said: "I have to get myself clean", adding: "I promise you, the next time you see me... I'm going to be the mum you deserve" before emotionally walking away.

Viewers were left emotional over the sad scenes as one person said: "Going to miss Donna-Marie, Lucy-Jo portrayed her excellently, i hope she returns in the future, well and ready to repair her relationships with her close ones. #Hollyoaks", a different account put: "I'm sad Donna-Marie is leaving...I hope she'll be back at some point!", another follower wrote: "Lucy-Jo Hudson has been outstanding at portraying a grieving, broken Donna-Marie. She'll be missed #Hollyoaks" with a crying emoji.

Talking to Metro, actress Lucy-Jo, 40, who played Donna-Marie, said of a potential return in the future: "Never say never! I mean I’ve absolutely loved Donna-Marie and, in a show where everybody’s so glam, I’ve loved playing the downtrodden character with the yellow teeth, pale face, dark eyes, greasy hair – I’ve loved that look.

"She actually turned her life around but she still has that edge, she still has that strength and you know she tries to do good for others but messes up all the time. Her humour was amazing – the one-off lines were brilliant so I do love her and I’ll miss her. Never say never, but right now I’m looking forward to opening another door and trying some other new projects."
