A young Micah Richards once asked Steven Gerrard if he could keep his boots - much to the Liverpool legend's amazement.

Richards made the cheeky request when he was called up to the England squad for the first time in November 2006, aged just 18. The promising Manchester City defender was left mortified when he arrived at training with the wrong pair of boots.

Richards was keen to impress Rio Ferdinand, Ashley Cole, Frank Lampard, John Terry, Wayne Rooney and other superstars in the England squad. To avoid the embarrassment of having no boots, he asked Gerrard if he could borrow a pair.

The Liverpool skipper agreed, but he wasn't impressed when Richards asked if he could keep the boots afterwards - telling him to "f*** off". Richards told Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer about the incident, leaving the legendary England strikers in stitches.

"I always took my own boots," Richards said on The Rest Is Football. "So I had two pairs - a mould and a stud. I look in my bag and as I'm going down I realise it's four left feet. So then I go in the corridor and I see Steven Gerrard - it's the first time I've met him properly.

"I said, 'Stevie, you can't borrow us a pair of boots can you?' Luckily we were a similar size. He gives me his boots, we go train - it's the best training session I've ever had. So I said to Steven Gerrard afterwards 'can I have the boots?' - he said 'f*** off!'."

Lineker, refencing Richards' 13 senior appearances for England, replied after laughing: "That's amazing, no wonder you did not get that many England caps."

The Rest Is Football is a new podcast produced by Goalhanger Podcasts, a company co-founded by Lineker three years ago. The Match of the Day presenter co-hosts The Rest Is Football, which was launched last month, with Richards and Shearer.

The trio have revealed several stories during the last month, including Lineker's opportunity to work in management. Both Aston Villa and Leicester were interested in making him their boss during the 90s before he pursued a career in the media.

Lineker said: "I got a couple of job offers, I think Villa, Doug Ellis (Villa chair) asked me to be Villa manager, and Leicester did at one point.

"I got a phone call from Doug Ellis, it was shortly after, I can’t remember the era apart from the fact that it was relatively soon after I’d finished playing, and he said, 'Would you be interested in the Aston Villa job’. And I just said, 'Management is not for me, sorry Doug'."
