This Morning guest says show 'saved her life' after live breast examination

A This Morning guest has shared her gratitude to the ITV daytime show after revealing a segment that aired six months ago "saved her life".

Priya Kaura was watching the show back in March when show regular Dr Sara Kayat performed a breast examination live on air on a breast cancer survivor named Leeanne Adu. Leeanne went topless in the episode so that she and Sara could show viewers the right way to check their breasts for any signs of breast cancer.

Encouraging women to check their breasts and to attend screenings, the segment aimed to get more viewers to check for lumps and other signs of the disease, in the hope that a diagnosis would be spotted early. Someone watching the segment was This Morning viewer Priya, who admitted on the show on Tuesday she had never checked her breasts.

She happened to be working from home the day that the examination aired, and was "surprised" to see Leeanne removing her gown and being checked on air. But the moment encouraged Priya to check her own breasts, following Dr Sara's steps.

Almost immediately, Priya found a lump and soon confided in her husband. He pleaded with her to speak to her GP and five days later she did make an appointment, with her doctor also noticing the lump on her left breast straight away. She was reffered to the hospital for tests and a few weeks later, on her birthday, she learned she had cancer.

Priya said the lump was the size of a small coffee bean on her left breast, but she was unaware until tests that underneath it she had a five-centimetre tumour. That wasn't all, as tests also revealed she had a very aggressive two-centimetre tumour on her right breast, the breast she hadn't actually checked.

She added the tumour was so deep that there was no lump detectable, and so it was only through the tests after finding the lump on her left breast that it was discovered. Speaking to hosts Holly Willoughby and Dermot O'Leary, she told of her treatment: "Three months ago I had a double mastectomy and now I'm in treatment. I've been in continuing treatment for three to four months and that will continue until the end of the year where eventually, I'll be rebuilt by the wonderful doctors at The Royal Marsden. It's incredible and the professionals there not only save you physically and medically but emotionally as well."

Holly then asked if her prognosis would have been different had she not been watching This Morning that day, to which Priya agreed it would be and credited the show for saving her life. She said: "Absolutely because I caught it early enough to be treated.

"I would not have caught it had I not have been watching This Morning at that time, I am really clear about that. I owe you a debt of gratitude actually and Leeanne as well, and that person who was saved was me, so I'm really happy to meet Leeanne today and thank her."

On hearing how the segment had saved lives, Leeanne said: "It's extremely overwhelming but it makes it completely worth it. When I came on that day I was so nervous. I knew I was going to be doing a good thing but I didn't think of the wider ramifications or who would be seeing it or that I'd be on TV at 10am with my breasts out. So to hear there are people who took it in and checked themselves for the first time, it really makes every moment worth it."
