Southgate gives thoughts on Sancho's England future amid Man Utd uncertainty

Jadon Sancho has been told he can fight his way back into the England set-up.

Manchester United winger Sancho has fallen out of favour for England in the past two years and now faces an uncertain future at Old Trafford after a war of words with Erik ten Hag. But England boss Gareth Southgate says regaining his international place could help him get back on track.

Southgate said: “I think that’s the challenge for him now. It’s been the best part of a couple of years since we worked with him, it’s difficult to say exactly the position that he finds himself and where he is with it all.

"But for every player that’s not with us, there is always an opportunity if they can seize the form and have the (right) level of performances.” Sancho has 23 senior England caps, winning the first of them when he was still a Borussia Dortmund player.

A challenging spell at Manchester United has seen his opportunities dwindle, and Southgate hasn't selected him since the October 2021 break, when he played 45 minutes against Andorra in a World Cup qualifier.

The 23-year-old featured from the bench in United's first three games this season, but was left out by club boss Erik ten Hag for the defeat at Arsenal. After Ten Hag indicated the winger's absence was down to his form in training, Sancho hit back at the manager.

According to the Daily Star, Sancho may now look for a United exit in January. It remains to be seen whether that would be in the form of a loan move or a permanent departure for a man who set them back a £73m transfer fee in 2021, but the same report suggests the club may opt for an initial loan followed by a permanent summer exit.

“You have to reach the level every day at Manchester United," Ten Hag said while explaining Sancho's omission at the Emirates Stadium. "You can make choices in the front line, so in this game he wasn't selected."

The player himself, however, felt he was being unfairly singled out. "Please don't believe everything you read! I will not allow people saying things that is completely untrue," he wrote on social media.

"I have conducted myself in training very well this week. I believe there are other reasons for this matter that I won't go into, I've been a scapegoat for a long time which isn't fair!
