Sinead O'Connor remembered as 'funniest person I know' by ex-husband

Sinead O'Connor's ex-husband has reflected on the close friendship he had with the late singer, even after they divorced, and says she was the funniest person he knew.

Music producer John Reynolds was married to Sinead - who passed away aged 56 in July - from 1989 until 1991 and together they share a son named Jake, who they welcomed in 1987. Although John and Sinead split and divorced in 1991, they remained close friends and he was left devastated by the news of her death this summer.

Reflecting on Sinead’s life, John says that she was heroic in her approach to discussing mental health and raising awareness of abuse within the Catholic Church - including the moment she tore up a photo of the Pope during a TV appearance in 1992, a move which sparked considerable controversy. John says he recalls Sinead’s sense of humour above all else.

He told a special edition of Hot Press magazine paying tribute to the singer and activist: "I think it’s important to remember - amid all the seriousness, the confrontations, and the political stances she took – she was also a really, really funny person who had a great sense of humour.

"She was great fun to just hang out, and talk with. She was the funniest person I know, because she really didn’t care. There was nobody really like her. She was just such a unique force."

John also explained that he was concerned for Sinead following the death of her son, Shane - who she shared 76-year-old musician Donal Lunny - committed suicide aged 17 in January last year. John had tried to lift Sinead’s spirits by encouraging her about the documentary film, Nothing Compares, which charted the meteoric rise of Sinead.

He said: "Sinead had talked to me two or three times a day, so you get used to somebody’s level of existence – which for her, for the last couple of years, has been very limited. She’s had a lot of mental health issues and she’d lost Shane, so it was really difficult to get through these last few years.

"But I thought the film [Nothing Compares] was a very positive thing for her. She loved Kathryn [Ferguson, the director], and she loved the fact it was being made. I told her ‘It will all be positive. It’s all going to be supportive.’ Because I just felt like she was going under."

Sinead was found dead at her London home on 26 July this year. A cause of death has not yet been made public. Sinead’s haunting last social media post was made in tribute to her late son, Shane.

She wrote on X, formerly Twitter: “#lostmy17yrOldSonToSuicidein2022. Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him.”
