Expert warns Sofia Richie fans against attempting to create her iconic sleek bun
Apparently, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, which is why so many of us copy our favourite celebrities when it comes to recreating their beauty, hair, and fashion looks. One A-lister who is known for her covetable tresses is Sofia Richie - daughter of singing sensation Lionel, sister of reality star-turned-fashion designer Nicole, and ex of playboy lothario Scott Disick.
The 25-year-old recently got married to her music exec beau Elliot Grainge, 29, in three stunning bespoke Chanel gowns and wore her hair up in her signature chic bun. Her trademark style has become a must-have look thanks to its effortless finish, with many flocking to try it for themselves.
Sofia shared a tutorial revealing how she likes to do her version of the slicked-back knot. Sharing with her 3.4 million followers on TikTok, she revealed that she was delighted so many of her fans thought this look was ‘chic’ as she actually considers it her ‘lazy girl’ ’do.
While most people were delighted to find out how she created the beautiful twist, one hair expert has warned against it, insisting that working the hair so hard with a comb and brush while wet could cause serious breakage and damage.
Abbey Yung, who says she is a trichologist in training, shared a TikTok explaining why Sofia’s hairstyle should be avoided. She wrote: “One of my favourite hairstyles to look at, but one of my least favourite for damage.” Continuing in the video over the top of Sofia’s step-by-step, she said: “Don’t try this hairstyle if you’re trying to grow out damaged hair.

“Wet hair is incredibly fragile and susceptible to breakage. But even when our hair is dry, brushing, pulling, and twisting on it, is what ultimately causes our hair to snap off. So the potential for breakage just becomes so much worse when you're doing all of those things to super wet hair.”
Many viewers were delighted with the advice and shared their own experience of trying the look. One woman wrote, “I started doing these buns for only three weeks my hair broke really bad,” to which Abbey replied, “I’m glad you stopped at three though I’ve seen people do this for so long it causes hair thinning at their hairline.”
Another person agreed with Abbey, writing: “Don’t do it! I got a bald spot from doing this.” And a third viewer added: “I thought that when I watched her yanking on her wet hair, thanks for this timely video!”
