Joe Burrow celebrated becoming the highest-paid player in NFL history for "about five minutes" before focusing on the Cincinnati Bengals’ 2023 season.

On Thursday night, Burrow became the league’s highest-paid player as he inked a five-year contract extension worth $275 million with $219.01 million guaranteed. Over the last few seasons, the Bengals have enjoyed the luxury of building a roster around the quarterback and earning postseason success while the 2020 first-overall pick has been on his rookie deal.

Burrow has emerged as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL since arriving from LSU. He has led the Bengals to the AFC Championship over the last two years, and reached Super Bowl LVI where Cincinnati fell to the Los Angeles Rams.

After receiving his deal, which became official on Saturday, Burrow spoke to reporters and addressed how he celebrated the landmark contract. His answer epitomises his incredible mentality as he hopes to lead the Bengals back to the postseason.

“Take a deep breath,” Burrow said. “Celebrate for about five minutes then you got to continue about your weekly process. It’s game week.”

His answer highlights the impressive leadership Burrow possesses. Recently named a team captain for the fourth consecutive season, Burrow has served as the heartbeat of one of the most exciting franchises in the NFL.

The 26-year-old is the face of the franchise, and the centrepiece of the new era of Bengals under head coach Zac Taylor. “Quarterback is the most critical position in sports, and Joe has embraced his role here with intelligence and determination," Taylor said on Saturday.

“The team responds to Joe as our quarterback, and we look forward to a bright future with Joe continuing to lead our talented roster. He makes everyone better.”

A Heisman Trophy winner at LSU, Burrow has started 42 regular-season games for the Bengals and owns single-season franchise records for passing attempts (606), completions (414), passing yards (4611), TD passes (35), and passer rating (108.3). He is known for his elite accuracy, and he is set to enter his fourth season as the NFL’s all-time leader in career completion percentage (68.2).

After awarding his quarterback with the biggest deal in NFL history on a per-annum basis, Bengals president Mike Brown praised Burrow and spoke glowingly about the future of the franchise. “My father always said that in the NFL, the quarterback is like the key to your car," he said. "You can have a great car, but you need a key to get the car going and to operate it at a high level. We feel that we have a good one in Joe.

“Our franchise has been fortunate to have many good quarterbacks over the years, starting with Greg Cook and now running through Joe. Half a dozen Pro Bowl quarterbacks have graced our corridors, and Joe is an intelligent player who loves the game of football. The franchise is pleased to be in good hands.”
