Meghan Markle confessed Queen's death was 'complicated time' for her and Harry
News of Queen Elizabeth II's death sent shockwaves around the world this time last year, as the monarch passed away at the age of 96. The beloved Queen was laid to rest just a few months after celebrating her Platinum Jubilee, which had cemented her as the second-longest reigning monarch in the world.
While the public mourned her loss greatly, with an estimated 250,000 members of the public visiting Westminster Hall to see her coffin lying in state ahead of her funeral, none were more devastated than the royal family, who had not only lost the head of The Firm, but also their mother and grandmother. And one month after her death, Meghan Markle shed some light on how she and Prince Harry were coping with the loss, revealing things had been "complicated".
She also said she felt 'fortunate' to have known the monarch (Getty Images)Meghan heaped praise on the Queen as she said the woman had been a "shining example" of female leadership, and admitted that while things had been tough for her and her husband Harry, the Duke of Sussex was trying to remain optimistic, especially as his grandmother's passing meant she could be "reunited with her husband", Prince Philip.
Speaking to Variety in October last year, Meghan said: "There's been such an outpouring of love and support. I'm really grateful that I was able to be with my husband to support him, especially during that time. What's so beautiful is to look at the legacy that his grandmother was able to leave on so many fronts. Certainly, in terms of female leadership, she is the most shining example of what that looks like.
"I feel deep gratitude to have been able to spend time with her and get to know her. It's been a complicated time, but my husband, ever the optimist, said, 'Now she's reunited with her husband'. I've reflected on that first official engagement that I had with her, and how special that felt. I feel fortunate. And I continue to be proud to have had a nice warmth with the matriarch of the family."
Oprah Winfrey snubs Harry and Meghan as expert claims 'the tide has turned'
Meghan and Harry, who live in California, were in Europe on other engagements when the Queen passed, which allowed Harry to travel to Balmoral to be with his family immediately after her death. The couple remained in the UK until the funeral, joining the new Prince and Princess of Wales to view floral tributes in Windsor. It was the first time the two couples were seen together since their fall out and Meghan and Harry's bombshell Oprah interview.
"In big moments in life, you get a lot of perspective," Meghan explained, "It makes you wonder what you want to focus your energy on. Right now, we feel energized and excited about all of the things we've been building toward. We're also focused on our foundation. So much of the work we do includes the philanthropic space."
Prince Harry flew to Balmoral alone after his dad, King Charles, told him not to bring Meghan with him. In his memoir, Spare, Harry claimed his dad gave reasons that he felt "didn't make any sense, and actually they were disrespectful" before the monarch eventually said he didn't want too many people there.
Harry wrote: "Regretful, he stammered that he simply didn't want it to fill up with people. Nobody's wife was going, not even Kate, he told me, so Meg shouldn't either."
