Kate Garraway has revealed that she 'truly feels for' King Charles on the first anniversary of Queen Elizabeth's passing.

On September 8, 2022, the world came to a stand-still when it was announced that the Queen had died at the age of 96. Her reign of over 70 years is the longest of any British monarch and the longest verified reign of any female head of state in history.

Following her death at Balmoral, King Charles - formerly known as Prince Charles - took over the reign amid much family turmoil including his warring sons, Prince William and Prince Harry.

Reflecting on the 12 months gone by on Good Morning Britain on Friday, hosts Kate Garraway and Ben Shephard weighed in on King Charles' reign, with Kate admitting that she 'feels for' the King due to William and Harry's crumbling relationship.

"It has been a very difficult year for the King I feel. With everything that has happened between William and Harry and the release of Spare and the Netflix documentary, it feels as though it will be hard to come back from that. I feel for Charles because of his two warring sons, especially all the while grieving over the Queen," the presenter shared.

It comes after the King paid an emotional tribute to his mother on the eve of the first anniversary of her passing, while thanking people across the globe for their support after he took over her role as sovereign. King Charles also reaffirmed his pledge to devote his life to service as King.

The poignant statement from the King read: "In marking the first anniversary of Her late Majesty’s death and my accession, we recall with great affection her long life, devoted service and all she meant to so many of us.

“I am deeply grateful, too, for the love and support that has been shown to my wife and myself during this year as we do our utmost to be of service to you all.”

The King has remained at Balmoral in Scotland, where the Queen died, to spend time “quietly reflecting” on his loss, as well as his first 12 months as sovereign and “looking forward to the future”.

As part of the commemorations, the Palace today released an image of the Queen personally selected by Charles. It was taken on October 16, 1968, as part of an official sitting granted to Cecil Beaton, who passed away in 1980.

The image has not been released before now but was first shown at the National Portrait Gallery from 1968 to 1969, as part of its first photographic exhibition of Beaton Portraits 1928-68. It was taken at the Palace when the Queen was 42

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV1 and ITVX.
