Prince Harry has broken cover at a charity awards ceremony in the UK on the eve of the first anniversary of his grandmother the late Queen's death.

The Duke of Sussex was seen smiling as he shook hands as he arrived at the WellChild Awards in London. It is set to be a whistle-stop trip to the UK for Harry. His Invictus Games for wounded troops begins in Dusseldorf, Germany, on Saturday, meaning he is likely to spend less than 48 hours in his home country.

Harry, wearing a navy suit and pale blue tie, arrived alone at The Hurlingham Club in south-west London for the event, which celebrates seriously ill children and their families. A host of famous faces, including former Olympic swimmer Mark Foster and TV presenter Charlotte Hawkins, joined the duke in attendance.

But despite being in Britain at the same time as both his father King Charles and his brother Prince William - and one on a poignant anniversary - he will not see either of them as insiders confirmed neither the King nor Prince of Wales have plans to see the Duke, while he has “no intention” of visiting them.

A source said the family relationship remains “firmly rooted at rock bottom” after Harry’s criticism of Charles, 74, and William, 41, and other royals in TV interviews and his explosive memoir Spare.

The insider added: “While some may suggest it would be good order for the family to settle their differences, perhaps even in the late Queen’s memory, things are a long way off.” The last time Harry was with Charles and William was the King’s Coronation on May 6.

The brothers also joined their wives Kate and Meghan as they viewed flowers at Windsor Castle after the Queen’s funeral. The King and wife Camilla are expected to mark the Queen’s death privately at Balmoral, where she died, while William and Kate will be in Wales for visits.

Another royal insider suggests the Duke of Sussex may make time to see his cousins, Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice. Harry is not understood to have spoken to his brother in months and has had little contact with his father. Sources claim there are no plans for a public event or get-together to mark the Queen’s death.

Meanwhile, Meghan will join Harry at the Invictus Games being staged in Germany, a spokesperson for the couple has confirmed - but will not be with him in the UK. Meghan is expected to miss the opening ceremony of the sporting event for wounded military personnel and veterans being staged in Dusseldorf from September 9 over eight days.

But she will fly to Europe and join husband Harry shortly after the event – which will see participants from across the globe taking part – begins. A spokesperson for the couple said: "The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are delighted to attend the Invictus Games 2023 in Dusseldorf. The Duke will be in attendance throughout the entirety of the games and will be joined by the Duchess shortly after the games begin."
