Wrexham's Ryan Reynolds has explained the lengths he and co-owner Rob McElhenney went to as they prepared to meet King Charles.

The affable Hollywood pair endeared themselves to a whole new audience during the previous series of hit TV show Welcome to Wrexham. The North Wales outfit's cult fans will now get to see the team's chairmen out of their comfort zone as they prepared to brush shoulders with royalty.

The monarch and his wife Queen Camilla made the trip to the Racecourse Ground in December of last year and it is clear that the visit involved a great deal of preparation. In a trailer released for the second season of the acclaimed documentary, the Red Dragons chiefs are sent to "monarchy boot camp" prior to the event.

In their typical tongue-in-cheek manner, the Wrexham owners spoke into the camera as they described their discussions with an etiquette coach. Reflecting on being put through their paces prior to the arrival of the esteemed guests, Reynolds said: "So the King of England called. We went to monarchy boot camp."

Among the things their coach advised them was about their first encounters with the royals, saying: "Everything begins with the first impression. Let me see the two pumps and release". Seeing the humorous side of the situation, the Canadian laughed: "It was like the military except your pinky is always up."

The footage also shows the Deadpool superstar sitting in a chair, while offering up another dry one-liner as he made sure he sat perfectly still, adding: "I feel like a serial killer."

Prior to the meeting last year, Reynolds was open about his excitement to welcome King Charles and Queen Camilla to Wrexham, saying: "Rob and I both said early on, and this holds true and for the rest of our lives, we will do anything to uplift and elevate this community and this club and having the King pay a visit is certainly one way to do it."

The encounter between Hollywood royalty and the bona fide variety seemingly went swimmingly, despite the obvious nerves of Wrexham's owners. In fact, it appeared that the comedy pair made quite the impression on the monarch when they eventually were able to talk.

Speaking about the impact the Dragons owners are having on the reputation of the club and the wider region, King Charles said: "I had the opportunity to see one of the other wonders of Wrexham, namely the football club, which is busy putting Wrexham on the map as never before."

This new season of Welcome to Wrexham is expected to chart the club's successful promotion tilt, which saw them return to the EFL after a 15 year absence. The Dragons have had a mixed start to the new campaign and sit in 13th place in the League Two table after six outings.
