Owning a dog comes with a lot of responsibility and sometimes you have to make difficult decisions that are in the pooch’s best interests - even if it might break your heart. One animal shelter has shared the reality of doing right by your beloved pet by sharing an open letter to a person who was forced to abandon their canine buddy.

Posting to their Facebook page, LifeLine Animal Project in Atlanta, Georgia wrote an impassioned note to the homeless owner of a dog named Milo, who was left in early August, to let them know he was safe and being well taken care of. They wrote: “We found your dog right where you left him in a space where he wouldn't get hit by a car or harmed when wandering freely in search of sanctuary.”

Describing what Milo’s owner did as a “brave act of self-sacrifice” they assured the anonymous person that he would receive the best possible care, getting “veterinary care, and food, water, and a roof over his head”. The message went on: “Because of your note, we knew Milo's name, how old he is, that he has been friends with other dogs and cats and that he is very obviously loved. We love him, too, and will do everything in our power to help him go home. If you are reading this and there's any chance that we can help reunite you with Milo and support both of you, please reach out to our team. You will be met with compassion and understanding.”

In addition to several photos of the gorgeous dog, the shelter also revealed the heart-breaking note that was left alongside Milo. It read: “To whom it may concern, please do not judge me on this single act alone. I am simply a human trying to do what is best for my puppy. I am homeless and cannot fulfil the duties needed to care for him. I have tried rehoming him and searching for fosters. I cannot support him or myself. This is the only way I know you can take him and he’s safe. He’s a sweetheart and very well-mannered and trained.”

The owner also left some information about the pup, revealing he was only eight and a half months old, got on well with dogs and cats, loved cuddles and naps, and was up-to-date with all of his shots.

The moving post gathered a huge amount of attention from people who were not only happy to see Milo being cared for but desperate to reunite him and his owner. One person wrote: “Milo is the sweetest! Thank you for this beautiful post. I will be rooting for Milo and his owner, and hoping they can both find safety, together.”

Another person added: “This was so beautifully written and a sad reality. Heartbreaking. People don’t want to abandon their pets by choice many times - it is just financial hardship but often people in abusive situations don’t want their animals to suffer abuse or have no choice. I hope and pray for better circumstances for both Milo and his owner.”

And someone else penned: “There is always another side. We need to remember that. What a heartbreak. It’s a reminder that we all need to find a place to do more in our community. There is a lot of need and really it could be any of us in these shoes. Thank you for all you do and this reminder, sparked by Milo and his person.”

The shelter later shared an update on the dog revealing that although they had been unable to locate Milo’s owner, he had been adopted by a new family who had fallen “head over heels” in love with the beautiful pup. They wrote: “After exhausting every option at hand, we still weren't able to find his owner. However, an incredible family came to the shelter and they fell head over heels for this sweet boy.

“Shelters are very hard on dogs, especially big, young pups with lots of energy and love to give. We felt the chances of reuniting Milo at this point were very slim, especially after all the coverage, and didn't want him to deteriorate in the shelter without a family to spoil him. We're happy to report that Milo is now adopted, loved, and in a fantastic home with his new family. We hope to get lots of updates on his journey and we thank you all for being a special part of it.”
