A pair of four-year-old twins tragically suffocated after falling asleep in their cedar toy chest in the middle of the night.

Siblings Aurora and Kellan had been taken to bed by their father Don Starr on August 25 but decided to snuggle up in the box where they stored stuffed animals.

The pair ran out of oxygen and suffocated and were eventually found dead by their older sibling who assumed they were still asleep.

Their mother detailed the tragic accidental suffocation of her two-year-old twins in a heart-wrenching Facebook post.

The unimaginable tragedy occurred last Friday, September 1, at night when the mother was at work, and her husband, identified as Don Starr, was responsible for putting their two older boys and the twins to bed.

The twins, known affectionately as "Kell Kell" and "Sissy," woke up during the night and decided to play in their room, a common occurrence according to their mother. However, this time, the twins chose an unusual place to snuggle up and fall asleep - inside a wooden cedar toy chest used to store their stuffed animals.

The mother explained that the twins must have moved or kicked during their sleep, inadvertently causing the lid of the toy chest to close. She was unaware like many others might be, that most wooden toy chests become airtight and soundproof when closed.

Tragically, as the twins slept peacefully, they slowly ran out of oxygen over the course of a few hours, ultimately leading to their untimely passing.

When the mother returned home from work the next morning and realized the twins were not awake, she and her husband began a frantic search throughout the house, calling out their names and seeking their whereabouts.

It was their older son, Axton, who eventually made the heartbreaking discovery by saying, "Mummy, I found them! They are so silly, just sleeping in the toy box." In those heartbreaking moments, it became painfully evident that something was terribly wrong, and it was already too late.

The mother expressed her disbelief and sorrow in the Facebook post, admitting that the tragedy made no sense to her and never will. She wrote (sic): "I have to believe that something in this universe chose them specifically, maybe to protect them from some future tragedy, or maybe because their souls were too perfect for this world... I NEED to live for my two amazing big boys, and I WILL [...] everything in me hopes that I will know someday because not knowing hurts too bad to keep living..."

She implored readers to be cautious, particularly if they have similar wooden toy chests in their homes, and urged them to consider removing or destroying them immediately.
