The Into the Unknown quest in Starfield can be a little confusing at first, but don't worry, here's a step-by-step guide for how to complete it.

Bethesda's massive space-faring RPG takes a little time to get going, particularly in regards to the main questline, but the Into the Unknown quest is where things really start to ramp up in Starfield. If you've secured Starfield early access ahead of the official launch – that will also see it land on Xbox Game Pass – then you'll know that at this stage of the game, you're now a fully-fledged member of the Constellation group. This is an organisation dedicated to space exploration, and you'd better strap in because there's some exploring to do and things to find.

Although the Into the Unknown quest is pretty straightforward, there are some elements that aren't immediately obvious, and it certainly took me a minute or two to figure out what the hell was going on, and how to advance the quest. But, you don't have to suffer. Here's how to complete the Into the Unknown quest in Starfield.

Starfield Into the Unknown – how to complete the quest

The Into the Unknown quest is split into a number of different individual missions. You'll have to find artifacts, find an NPC, visit another NPC, find a specific location and then do a puzzle of sorts to complete the quest. That's the short version. We've broken down the stages of the Starfield Into the Unknown quest so you can tackle it in the way that's most efficient.

Find two artifacts and Andreja

First, go and visit Vladimir at The Eye, which is the Constellation's space station. You can find The Eye orbiting Jemison in the Alpha Centauri system, which should sound familiar as this is where the game's main city, New Atlantis, is located.

Vladimir will give you coordinates for two locations, both of which will lead you to an artifact, and you'll need to collect both. In our playthrough, we had to travel to Tau Ceti VIII-B and Sumati, but the locations seem to change with every player so you may be sent elsewhere.

One of the artifacts will be very straightforward to obtain; you simply go to the location, mine the minerals away and grab it. But with the other artifact, you'll meet Andreja at the entrance, and you'll need to fight off quite a few enemies before grabbing it.

Once you've obtained both artifacts, head back to The Lodge in New Atlantis and add them to the collection. You'll then have to talk with Constellation members Matteo and Vladimir, with the latter giving you another set of coordinates, and you're tasked with investigating an anomaly. This is where things get interesting.

Find Temple Eta

The coordinates will lead you to another planet, and you'll immediately notice some weird distortion in your scanner and some interesting POIs. Ignore the POI markers for now and simply aim your scanner until you see the distortion at its strongest.

Walk in the direction of the distortion and eventually, you'll find yourself at an interesting structure called Temple Eta. You'll find a way into the temple by looking for a thin alleyway between two walls. Walk to the end and you'll be able to interact with the door and make your way inside.

Activate the portal

Once inside, you'll immediately begin to float, with the room featuring several swirling circles in the centre. To activate the device, you'll have to fly into these strange bubbles of light that are floating in the room. They are hard to describe but you'll know when you see them.

There will only be one of these at any one time, so simply glide into it as soon as you see one, and you'll notice a change in the soundtrack when you do it successfully. Eventually, you'll activate a portal in the middle of the room.

We're not going to spoil what happens next, but step inside and you'll obtain something quite extraordinary. All there is to do now is go back to The Lodge and share your discovery with the Constellation group, and hey presto, that's the Starfield Into the Unknown quest done!
