Sergio Perez considering Red Bull exit as F1 future doubted amid other interests
Sergio Perez has, for the first time, cast doubt upon his own Red Bull future.
The Mexican has been under pressure ever since he took the seat next to Max Verstappen. It's the nature of that role – the Dutchman shines brightly and has a habit of casting a long shadow over his team-mates.
But the scrutiny has ramped up this season. After a strong start with two wins from four races, Perez's challenge collapsed and he embarked on a horrible run of qualifying form despite having the best car on the grid.
He has a Red Bull contract until the end of next year. And team principal Christian Horner has repeatedly asserted that he intends to fully honour the full length of that deal.
Perez has himself already brushed off suggestions that he will leave any time soon. But he has now cast some doubt upon that stance, admitting that even the final year of his current deal is not set in stone.
Sebastian Vettel warns of looming F1 ban and is "very worried about the future"
"I think that now, with the season we've had, it's important in the next races to be in an environment where I feel I can contribute," he said. "And if that place in 2024 isn't here, then we have to look for alternatives."
He did clarify, though, that staying with Red Bull remains his preference, adding: "But, for now, my main focus is to stay here and win more races. And keep on winning championships with Red Bull. As you say, I have a contract for next year. So, at some stage next year, we'll see."
The admission came as Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko spoke again about Perez's future. He recently hinted at a change of stance at the team by stating: "Nothing is 100 per cent certain in F1," and has now doubted the Mexican's commitment to the sport.
The Austrian said: "Perez is not consistent. He is not always focused... Sergio is already over 30 and is having his fourth child. He already has other interests, so we will have to see what happens afterwards.
On the one hand, the Red Bull seat is one of the most sought-after. But, on the other hand, you also have Max Verstappen as an opponent. You need a very strong personality and also incredible mental strength for that. Perez is the one who has managed it the best of all the drivers in recent years, and has also achieved victories."
