Holly Willoughby was 'bag of nerves' before This Morning comeback

This Morning host Holly Willoughby may have been on a summer break with her family but it seems that the star was doing anything but relaxing, due to high levels of anxiety surrounding her future on the ITV show.

Holly, 42, has been presenting This Morning since 2009 alongside disgraced presenter Philip Schofield, but since it emerged that he had been having a secret affair with an ITV employee, Holly's future on the show has been hanging in the balance. So much so, those close to the star have said that she was literally a "bag of nerves" ahead of her return. Holly has been enjoying a two month break from the show, which is perhaps not unsual as tends to take an extended break over the summer holiday.

But friends close to the star recently revealed to Closer magazine: "It looks like Holly has had a dreamy summer away but the truth is she's been a bag of nerves, with the weight of the world on her shoulders thanks to the drama swirling around This Morning." They added: " It hasn't felt like a proper break because she's been in constant contact with her management team, talking about the implications of Phil's conduct and what it means for her and the show."

In May, the future of the entire show was called into question after Phililp's affair came to light and co-workers brandished the behind the scenes as a toxic environment. Both Eamon Holmes and Ruth Langsford had come forward and claimed that they had complained to ITV bosses regarding Philip's conduct with the younger male employee.

And then attention turned to Holly's alleged involvement in keeping it a secret to protect her 17 year friendship with Philip. The mum of three's anxiety was perhaps further heightened as she was snubbed from being nominated within the TV Presenter catagory at this year's National Televission Awards. Instead, her co-host Alison Hammond is part of a select group of nominees.

Philip has since spoken about his affair, as he was still married at the time, and said it was an "unwise but not illegal" relationship with the young collegue. Holly has always maintained that she had no idea that Philip had been secretly dating the ITV runner despite their close bond.

The former presenter, who now claims that his life has been left in tatters, had his contract with ITV terminated as well as plans for him to host the British Soap Awards. ITV even instructed a barrister to carry out an external review. In a bid to distance herself from the drama, Holly issued a statement in June which said that she had been left "shaken, troubled and let down" by the news.

But it looks as though this was not the only reason Holly and Philip's friendship was put under immense strain. According to reports, Holly was upset over allegedly being kept in the dark about Phillip's brother Timothy, who facing child sex offences charges in May. It's to be believed that Holly found out about the trial when her co-star took time off This Morning. Philip's brother was found guilty of the crime in April and was sentenced to 12 years in prison.
