Trey Lance exchanged texts with Dak Prescott before Dallas Cowboys trade
Dallas Cowboys quarterback Trey Lance has opened up on the text exchange he had with Dak Prescott.
The Cowboys agreed a trade with the San Francisco 49ers to acquire Lance in exchange for a future fourth-round pick. Lance, a third-year QB, will now be starting his new NFL career in Dallas for the 2023 regular season.
Lance was the No.3 overall pick by the Niners in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, the 23-year-old fell down the QB standings in San Francisco after being told he was behind Brock Purdy and Sam Darnold.
Now Lance will be looking to learn from Prescott, who is preparing for his eighth season in the NFL. Prescott will be the starting QB for the Cowboys, while Cooper Rush is expected to be the back-up.
News only emerged of Lance’s trade to the Cowboys on August 26, however the quarterback has revealed that he had received text messages from Prescott months earlier. Lance has explained how he is looking forward to learning from Prescott, saying that the next year will see him be a “sponge” as he looks ahead to his fresh start.

“The few conversations I had with him, just texting him when I had my ankle injury, things like that,” Lance told reporters on Tuesday.
“Just the type of person he is. And obviously, the football stuff kind of speaks for itself.
“I'm still trying to learn Day 1 install, so for me, obviously got a long way to go there. But definitely looking forward to being a sponge, just soaking up everything I can from him.”
Reflecting more on his move to the Cowboys, Lance admitted that he was surprised to hear that he would be moving to Dallas. Now Lance will work alongside his new head coach, Mike McCarthy, in what he sees as a new start for his career.
“It was a little bit surreal for me hearing I was going to come here knowing everything about this historic organization,” said Lance. “Just compared to the 49ers, obviously you think of that as another one of the top-tier, historic organizations, but for me, just very excited to be here.
“Coach McCarthy and the entire coaching staff, man, nothing but knowledge being in all these meetings.
“It's been awesome for me. It's been fun. Kind of a breath of fresh air to learn a new offense and being around the guys the last two days. I feel like I've learned so much just ball.”
