Emmerdale star Karen Blick sought an alternative method to cope with filming her character Lydia Dingle's rape storyline.

During filming, Karen, 45, revealed that she started using crystal healing therapy to deal with the harrowing scenes which will see her character get sexually attacked by ex boyfriend Craig Reed, played by Ben Addis. And to make things worse, Lydia is also being gaslighted by Craig which increases her self-doubt, feelings of guilt and fear that her truth will not be believed by thos in the village. Viewers will see that the longer time passes, Lydia is left unsure as to whether or not she will be deemed credible depending on how long she leaves it to report the attack.

Speaking about her alternative technique, Karen told Daily Star and other media at a recent press event: "I've got a lovely friend who's a crystal healing therapist and she contacted me a couple of weeks before we started filming and said, 'Can I help you? Can I help you look after your energy?'. I'm really open minded about things like this and I thought, 'Well it can't hurt, can it? I'll give it a go."

Karen went on to explain: "She gave me some crystals to kind of carry around with me to keep in my dressing room. I found it was a useful ritual to absorb some of the negative energy and some of the thoughts, feelings, emotions around this story." But the actor didn't just rely on crystal therapy to deal with filming such hard-hitting dark scenes. She also admitted to experiencing hypnotherapy and daily yoga.

On the back of professional advice, she said: "On the advice of professionals that I've spoken to, I had some hypnotherapy, I started a daily yoga practice so I could kind of get rid of anything that might have been physically staying with me at the end of the day." She added: "I was keen to find healthy, productive coping mechanisms. I made sure that I was in a good, strong, physical, psychological place in order to tackle this story."

In scenes that will air next month, Karen described how protective she felt of her character as she felt a duty to reflect the story well. She continued: "I felt very protective of the character and conflicted as an actor because it's an important story we're telling but then this terrible thing happening to somebody you are so close to and the repercussions for that character going forward."

She added: "It was a really moving, strong reaction, certainly the strongest reaction I've ever had to potential story, emotionally." Karen joined Emmerdale in 2016 and she said she cried when she was told of her character's storyline and said her initial reaction was "please don't do this to Lydia, please."
