Infidelity, or cheating, can be devastating to relationships - and no one wants to end up in a situation where it's done to them. But even more devastating than a partner cheating and owning up to it, is it happening for a long period behind your back, without you even knowing.

While it's important to trust your gut feeling, there are also other tell-tale signs that your partner is cheating that it's important to be aware of. So what are the clues you should be looking out for? A private investigator has revealed some of the tell-tale signs people might miss.

Speaking to The Mirror, Jack Charman, MD of National Private Investigators, shared that the most common signs of a cheating partner is protecting their phone, being distant from you and spending more time away from home." Below you can find even more reasons:

  • Being protective over their mobile phone
  • Clearing the internet history on the home computer
  • Hiding bank account details and phone bills
  • Not answering the phone or replying to texts when in a different room
  • Constantly working late
  • Suddenly spending a lot of time at the gym
  • Being less intimate
  • Being defensive for no reason
  • Turning any accusations on to you

However, according to the private investigator, none of these are any help to the client unless the following things are addressed:

Jack added: "So many people bury their heads in the sand for years and years. Some won't ever break free but if the above three things are addressed, life will start to move in the right direction." It's also important to look out for whether your partner is also living a double life. He explained: "Again this is very similar to the above scenario but often the subject has more sociopathic behaviour, the lies are bigger and more complex."

Explaining how he comes into this, Jack said: "As a private investigator, my day-to-day work is extremely varied. A case begins with the client getting in contact with me, usually via a phone call. They will explain the issue that they are facing and I will try to figure out a way in which I can help them.

"Essentially, I provide my clients with information and evidence that will solve the situation they are facing and allow them to move forward, whilst educating and empowering them through my work. They could be facing anything from a cheating partner, finding long-lost relatives, providing evidence of insurance fraud or conducting background checks on employees.

"Every job is different as everybody's circumstances are different. I probably have between five to 10 jobs running at any one time. Sometimes jobs can take a few hours to do, and some of the more complex jobs can go on for months at a time."

People suspecting their partners are cheating on them is one of the most common reasons people hire a private investigator - as this can either confirm or deny their suspicions.
