People who hope to lose some weight might try out several different diets before finding one that works for them, but if they were to ask TV's Dr Michael Mosley for advice, he would most likely recommend trying a time-restricted eating (TRE) diet, also known as intermittent fasting. Dr Mosley is famed for his Fast 800 and 5:2 eating plans, both of which are based on consuming calories for a restricted amount of time - and fasting the hours outside this.

Speaking on his popular podcast Just One Thing, he explained that TRE can "lower blood pressure, improve sleep, help with weight loss and even cut your risk of developing diabetes". He told listeners he was eating dinner round 7pm and then not having anything but water or black coffee until 9.30am the following day - 14 hours later. He added: "I'm not changing what I'm eating, I'm not cutting calories, I'm just changing when I eat. Extending your overnight fast can have surprising benefits."

But while fasting can have huge health benefits, it can also be tricky for people to ignore cravings - but luckily Dr Mosley has shared some helpful tips that will "keep the hunger at bay". Luckily, you can still drink during the "fasted" hours - as long as it's low in calories.

Dr Mosley explained that it's very important to "stay hydrated" while you're fasting - and adding fresh ginger and lemon to the drink can really boost the benefits. He explained: "Drinking plenty of water can keep the hunger at bay. You can also try adding fresh ginger, a slice of fresh lemon or lime to hot water or to sparkling water. Black coffee and tea are fine to have during your fasting hours."

There has been research to suggest that both ginger and lemon are great for boosting weight loss, and they are often component of so-called detox drinks. But even more important is the fact that it will hydrate you. Around 20% of the fluids we consume come from food, and for anyone limiting their calorie intake, so anyone who fasts regularly needs to compensate for this.

On The Fast 800 website, it also says: "Additionally, if you're opting to exercise, or simply increase your activity, alongside your fasting regime, you'll need to consider how much you sweat (more so if you have a higher starting weight) and increase your water intake to stay effectively hydrated."

Before you embark on a TRE diet, Dr Mosley recommends you take note of your weight, as this can be a "powerful motivator". He explained: "Weight loss can be a powerful motivator, so before you begin, make a note of your weight. It can take time to adjust to time-restricted eating, so don't panic if you need a few weeks to work out what works best with your schedule."

Another way of keeping the hunger feelings at bay is to brush your teeth after your last meal of the day. Dr Mosley said: "As soon as you have finished the last meal of the day, brush your teeth. It'll help you to keep away from snacks and nibbles!"

One of Dr Mosley's diets, which is known as the New 5:2 Diet, involves consuming 800 calories twice per week, and normally the other five days, but he encourages people to eat a low carb Mediterranean-style diet. Meanwhile, the Fast 800 involves following a daily 800-calorie eating plan for a minimum of two weeks and no more than 12 weeks. Then, followers of the plan restrict calories to 800 calories a day for two days of the week, and eat a Mediterranean diet for the remaining five days. Once they have reached their goal, there's a maintenance stage.

According to the NHS, the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 for women and 2,500 for men, and if you're trying to lose weight, they recommend reducing the daily intake by about 600 calories.
