He was billed as the signing to revitalise Manchester United's midfield - but just two games into the new season and Mason Mount has been hailed a mistake by a former Red Devil.

Full back Paul Parker won two Premier League titles with United, and was part of the 1993/94 double winning squad that also captured the FA Cup. And the pundit has not been afraid to be outspoken about his former club since retiring from playing back in 1997.

And now he's had his say on Mount, who arrived at Old Trafford in the summer for a £58 million fee. But it's been anything for a smooth start for the England international, who cut a peripheral figure in United's opening two games against Wolves and Tottenham.

To compound matters, the 24-year-old is now ruled out with a hamstring injury, with Erik ten Hag fearing the problem is worse than first thought. And Parker, 59, is unimpressed with what he's seen so far, suggesting the transfer fee would have been better utilised on James Maddison.

"Manchester United should have spent the Mason Mount money on James Maddison," he told bettors. I’ve never been too sure on Maddison because of his temperament and he picks up a lot of injuries. His performances so far suggest that Maddison would have been the right player to buy.”

Instead, the former Leicester man is currently excelling with Spurs, getting his first goal for his new club in the lunchtime kick-off against Bournemouth on Saturday. And Parker argued he, and not Mount, would have been a more appropriate capture for his old club.

“I personally wasn't behind buying Mount," he continued. "He isn’t what Manchester United needs. They needed somebody to come in and be like Eriksen. Maddison is like Eriksen when he was at Tottenham. A wonderful player to watch. One of the best foreign players to come to the Premier League in recent times. One of the top players to come from Europe.”

Casemiro, whose impact was hailed last season after his huge money move from Real Madrid, has also been ineffective thus far. And Parker further argued that Maddison, who only commanded a £40 million fee, would have complimented the Brazilian star.

“Casemiro is missing someone next to him that can pass the ball," he added. "The ball isn’t being passed. It’s being given away cheaply. You’ve got someone in Mount who runs around a lot and someone in Fernandes who is erratic and displays his frustration and throws his hands in the air rather than chase back.”

Ten Hag is still pursuing further midfield options before the summer transfer window closes on Friday, with Sofyan Amrabat is top target. However, the club are yet to make a bid, with FFP restrictions meaning they must first sell before spending further.
