As anyone with long hair will undoubtedly know, keeping on top of your tresses can feel like a full-time job at times, particularly if you're prone to knottiness. Luckily, a professional hairdresser has now come forward with her tried and trusted hack for brushing wet hair with ease, and it's highly likely you've been doing it wrong for years.

In a video uploaded via TikTok, talented stylist Rachel Valentine, who regularly shares haircare advice with her admiring followers, demonstrated how she brushes her hair while it's still wet, and her method couldn't be more straightforward to follow, even for non-professionals.

Addressing her followers, Rachel, who goes by the username @rachelvalentinehair, revealed: "I'm gonna show you how I detangle hair once it's been washed. So if you apply some product first - this can be your heat protector or your leave-in conditioner. This is gonna really help you remove the knots and it won't be as painful. The brush you use is so important. I like Tangle Teezer, you can use a Wet Brush if you want but definitely don't use your average combs or paddle brushes. They are not for detangling. They are for styling only."

Rachel then proceeded to advise haircare fans to brush their locks from the bottom up, explaining: "You're going to start teasing at the bottom and you can see that it's coming out quite easily. If you start at the top, the brush is gonna get stuck, even if it is a really good one, and it's gonna pull on your scalp and that's not gonna be good."

She continued: "I'm starting from the bottom and I'm gonna slowly just work my way up and you can see how easy that is, and my hair as you can see is super knotty. If your hair is super fragile, you might wanna wait until it's dried a little bit because when your hair is wet it's gonna stretch and it may cause breakage. My hair is quite strong, so I can go in and detangle it now while it's wet."

A number of people have been left eager to try Rachel's method for themselves, with one person commenting: "You've made me go out and buy a tangle teezer this afternoon!!!" Another applauded: "Your videos are the best I could literally watch them over and over again."
