Manchester United are running out of time to make a move for Sofyan Amrabat after executives at the club 'promised' to make a move for the Fiorentina midfielder.

The Red Devils have already spent in excess of £170million on deals for Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to strengthen the spine of their team, but Erik ten Hag is still seeking further reinforcements for his engine room ahead of next week's transfer deadline.

Amrabat, 27, has been a long-term target for Ten Hag and is free to leave Fiorentina for the right price. However, a move for the Morocco international has yet to materialise - even though United have privately indicated they intend to strike a deal.

According to Italian outlet Quotidiano, via Sport Witness, Manchester United officials have 'promised' to firm up their interest in Amrabat with an official proposal but are now expected to wait until closer to the September 1 deadline in a bid to strike a more favourable deal.

Amrabat is currently training alone and was excluded from the Fiorentina squad that will play Rapid Vienna in the first leg of a Europe Conference League play-off.

The Italian outfit have made no secret of the fact that they are open to selling Amrabat this month at the right price. Chief executive Giuseppe Barone even gave Manchester United the green light to make their move earlier this week when he made it clear that Fiorentina would consider bids for any unhappy players.

He told Sky Sports: "Sofyan's not working with the squad — but we have still not received any bid for Amrabat this summer. If there are players who are unhappy here, we can start considering bids for them of course."

Manchester United are expected to try and move on several players who have been deemed surplus to requirements by Ten Hag before the transfer deadline in a bid to raise further funds for the Dutchman.

In midfield, the likes of Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek have both attracted interest and could be given the go-ahead to move if suitable proposals are tabled for their services. Former club captain Harry Maguire is also thought to be available for transfer, although he turned down the chance to join West Ham earlier in the window.

United have made an underwhelming start to the new Premier League campaign and will be looking to bounce back from last weekend's 2-0 loss against Tottenham when they host Nottingham Forest on Saturday afternoon.
