Liverpool's owners Fenway Sports Group must do more to support Jurgen Klopp in the transfer market - as he's "no Harry Potter".

That's the opinion of Jose Enrique, who is the latest Reds hero to criticise the club's transfer strategy. Although Liverpool have signed Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Wataru Endo this summer, they have failed to sign a young defensive midfielder.

Liverpool tried to land Moises Caicedo and Romeo Lavia earlier this month, but both players rejected a move to Merseyside in favour of joining Mauricio Pochettino's Chelsea. That's left the Reds scrambling around in the final week of the transfer window.

"It's not good enough, that's the truth," Enrique tells Mirror Football on behalf of Grosvenor Sport. "You have a manager like Klopp who has proved he can fight for every single trophy - even without the budget of City, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, Real Madrid.

"But he's no Harry Potter - he's not a magician. Even Pep Guardiola, every manager in the world needs to spend, you need to keep improving the team. It's very sad to see they are not doing that for Klopp... there's only so much he can do."

Enrique's comments come after Jamie Carragher labelled Liverpool's transfer policy a "joke". Carragher told Sky Sports: "They need to buy someone in midfield. People know that they're desperate. They put in a (now failed) bid for Lavia today for £60m, even when they refused to pay £50m four or five days ago. It's been an absolute mess. It's a joke.

"The biggest problem about it is that Liverpool have known they've needed midfield reinforcements since about August last season."

Liverpool are hopeful of signing another defensive midfielder before Friday's transfer deadline. Crystal Palace talent Cheick Doucoure is on their shortlist - although he could cost £70million - and so is Bayern Munich's highly-rated youngster Ryan Gravenberch.

A deal for Fiorentina's World Cup star Sofyan Amrabat seems unlikely - with Manchester United leading the transfer race - while an audacious move for struggling Manchester City man Kalvin Phillips can't be taken off the table just yet.

Whatever happens, Enrique is "100 per cent" certain Klopp is the right manager to take Liverpool forward. The German has won seven trophies since joining the club in October 2015 but struggled last season, finishing fifth in the Premier League.

Enrique believes the reason for Liverpool's recent woes is FSG's unwillingness to give Klopp sufficient funds in the transfer market. He adds: "Do you they have the right owners? After the transfer window I'll let you know!

"You cannot doubt Klopp, he's an unbelievable manager. Every season he has to fight to get back-up options and to sometimes even get a starting XI (capable of competing).

"I don't think the problem is the manager, the problem is from up there (in the directors' box). They definitely need to put more money in. That doesn't mean (it has to be the same amount as) Manchester City... but they definitely need to put money in there."
