Donald Trump has a surprising power dynamic with wife Melania as she keeps her distance from his criminal charges, an expert believes.

The former First Lady was often seen with her husband throughout his presidency and provided support to Trump away from politics.

But, according to body language expert, Judi James, their relationship started to show a shift in power as she became more confident and delivered speeches towards the end of Trump's time in office.

But when Trump was charged with paying money to porn star Stormy Daniels, Melania kept a defiant silence away from the spotlight, with many suggesting their relationship was under strain.

Judi exclusively told The Mirror: "She slowly moved centre stage during their term in office, making some credible speeches and even displaying some body language traits towards her husband that suggested a much more complex and surprising power balance.

"People were betting she would step out of the White House and into the sunset and there is similar speculation now that Trump is facing jail. But these photos would appear to show that, on some relationship levels, Melania intends to stand by her man.

"This appearance makes them look like a power couple in the same way that they began to pose together in his last year of office."

The former president knows it is essential to have Melania by his wife with his Republican base looking on as he bids to get back to the White House.

Judi added: "Trump now clearly understands the importance of having his wife by his side if he’s standing for office again and Melania seems to be signalling that she is still up for the role of FLOTUS."

One of the few times the pair were spotted together was in March when they had dinner in Mar-a-Lago just hours after Trump was charged with paying off Stormy Daniels.

And she wasn't afraid to be spotted with him, Judi revealed: "Her choice of a red, statuesque dress shows she’s keen to stand out and attract attention next to her husband, and red is always the colour of strong emotions, from love to passion to anger and war. It’s not a fade-away choice and neither is her body language here. She’s smiling and she appears to be co-hosting actively."

But despite not being glued to her husband's side, Judi believes it shows a power shift, as Trump would want his wife by his side.

She said: "Of course, Melania has shown many signals that have looked like acting and masking in the past, like her lightning smile and her flicking away of Trump’s hand and she hasn’t been glued to Trump’s side through his current crisis.

"But Trump has always been a very old-fashioned alpha. It was a long time before he worked his presidency as a double-act because business moguls like him don’t tend to take their spouses to work like politicians do.

"They both might see his courtroom appearances as something that an alpha male should also be getting through by himself, without his wife there holding his hand."
