Star Wars' tribute to Ray Stevenson in Disney's Ahsoka as ending is explained
Star Wars viewers noticed a touching tribute to a series star in the new Disney Plus live-action spin-off, Ahsoka. Eagle-eyed fans spotted an end screen in tribute to season actor Ray Stevenson, who tragically passed away aged just 58 in May.
A black and white title card flashed on screen saying 'For our friend, Ray' at the end of the hour-long first episode on the streaming site, paying tribute to the Hollywood star who portrayed Baylan Skoll, a former Jedi Knight who works as a mercenary for Imperial naval leader Morgan Elsbeth.
Speaking of his own character a month before he died, Ray told Screen Rant: "Maybe he's unique… some catalyst that upsets the apple cart, that sparks off and fires, and yet is meandering through a journey that is colliding and causing reactions."
Ray tragically died aged just 58 back in May earlier this year (Nicola Goode / Lucasfilm Ltd.)Stevenson explained: "When you see Baylan actually get to meet Thrawn, [you wonder] if it’s the first time or last time. 'What’s going on again? Hang on, what’s the dynamic here?'"
This wasn't Ray's first Star Wars role, he first appeared in the franchise voicing Gar Saxon in Star Wars Rebels and Star Wars: The Clone Wars. The talented actor also starred in films such as Punisher: War Zone, King Arthur and the Thor films. No other details of his death have yet been released. The much-loved Hollywood actor began his career appearing on TV shows in the 1990s then began landing action roles in Hollywood films starting in the 2000s.

His first major film role came in Antoine Fuqua’s 2004’s adventure movie King Arthur, where he played Dagonet, one of the Knights of the Round Table. Ray quickly became known to U.S. audiences as the charming soldier Titus Pullo on the big-budget 2005-2007 HBO series Rome.
Stevenson was featured in a touching tribute at the end of episode one (Suzanne Tenner / Lucasfilm Ltd.)A year after the series ended, he was on-screen in Punisher: War Zone (2008) as Marvel anti-hero Frank Castle. He then returned to the Marvel well several more times with small roles in Thor (2011) as Volstagg, a member of Thor’s pals known as the Warriors Three.
He last played the part in Thor: Ragnarok (2017). The star was born in Lisburn, Northern Ireland on May 25, 1964. While he originally pursued a career in interior design, he enrolled in the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and began his professional acting career after graduating at 29.
Stevenson’s acting credits span decades and genres. His other notable credits include parts in Dexter, Black Sails, and Medici, as well as The Spanish Princess and Vikings. He also was a part of the RRR cast, playing Scott Buxton in the buzzy, award-winning action drama. In 1997, Stevenson married English actress Ruth Gemmell in London. They had met on the set of Band of Gold (1995), and later played a married couple in Peak Practice (1997). The pair divorced in 2005 after eight years of marriage.
