Erik ten Hag faces early Mason Mount decision after "big" problem pointed out
Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been told he must sign a new midfielder this summer, despite already spending £60m on Mason Mount.
United have played a slightly different midfield set-up this season, with Mount lining up alongside Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. However, former Red Devils star Dimitar Berbatov believes they need another defensive midfielder to support Casemiro as the current setup allowed both Wolves and Tottenham to create "good chances in the middle" in United's first two Premier League games of the season.
Berbatov told Betfair: "Casemiro's support in midfield is a good question for the manager, does he think that Casemiro is getting enough support? If not, how can he fix it?
"If he's getting enough support then they continue the same way, another defensive midfield player, McTominay hasn't played yet, he's someone that is of a good quality and is young and hungry to improve and show his talent. If you're not going to count on him, then maybe you go and look for someone to bring into the team, buy someone.
"Fred has left, maybe they need another holding midfield player, but who? If Casemiro doesn't have a good supporting player in the midfield and you're playing against more attacking and risk-taking opposition, they're going to go straight at United.

"Spurs and Wolves both had good chances in the middle, so United should go and look for another defensive midfield player." Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher echoed Berbatov's concerns about United's midfield on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, claiming the current set-up is "not right" and Mount and Fernandes are leaving Casemiro "exposed".
"I think they have big problems in midfield," he said. "The set-up of their midfield is not right for me. I think there are a few things wrong. The manager's set-up, what he is asking them to do in terms of the profile of players, is not right.

But the reason I am saying I do not like the set-up from the manager is that he plays a man-marking system.
"You now see how disconnected the Manchester United midfield becomes because they go man to man. This guy in midfield [Casemiro], as we saw last Monday night and as we saw constantly on Saturday night, is being left exposed in the middle of the pitch on his own and he cannot cope.
"He has made a really poor start. I would be really worried about him going forward and the make-up of this Manchester United midfield. I am not sure that midfield can play together going forward for Manchester United to have the season that they want."
