The Lionesses have been reunited with the families and pets as they attempt to get over their Women's World Cup heartbreak.

The team, who lost 1-0 at a packed-out Stadium Australia in Sydney in the World Cup final on Sunday, did not hang around after landing at Heathrow on Tuesday morning - and some of the stars appeared to head straight home to see their loved ones.

Chloe Kelly posted a snap of her cuddling her nephew born while she was away with England. She wrote: “Finally met my nephew. Chace Kelly welcome to the world." Chloe also posted a picture cuddling her two dogs saying “back with my boys”.

Bethany England posted a picture of her two brown retrievers saying “finally reunited”. Another star reunited with their pet dog was Rachel Daly, who posted a cute video on Instagram alongside the caption: "Helllooooo babbbyyyyyyy".

Millie Bright introduced her new puppy to her Instagram followers. Alongside a picture of the long-haired miniature Dachshund, she said: “Best birthday give Elsa”. Bright revealed her boyfriend, Levi Crew, had given her the pet for her 30th birthday on Monday. He wrote on Instagram: “Life with you is everything, can’t wait to see you.”

The couple already have two dogs, French bulldog Zeus and another miniature dachshund named Hera, who featured on her Instagram regularly. One of the biggest hits of the World Cup was Mary Earps, who has launched her own clothing brand. The England goalkeeper was voted the best keeper at the tournament and saved a penalty in the final.

More than 73,000 people have signed a petition calling on Nike to make a replica Mary Earps’ shirt. They failed to include her kit in its selection of replica shirts printed with the names of the outfield players. Nike has said it will re-think its approach in the future. Earps has since hit back at the company's statement and wrote on Instagram: "Is this your version of an apology/taking accountability/a powerful statement of intent?"

Meanwhile, the Lionesses disappointed waiting fans when they returned from the World Cup by taking a private airport exit. A number of fans had turned out early to greet the team off their 6.30am flight. But they failed to get a glimpse of the pride of England at Heathrow, as the World Cup runners-up didn’t pass through arrivals.

Some fans slept overnight excitedly waiting to catch a glimpse of the team while others arrived in the early hours. One little girl held up a poster saying: “Lionesses you have inspired me to play what I love - football. You should be proud of yourselves.”

But the young fans, holding England flags, were only able to see their luggage which was wheeled through terminal 3’s arrivals hall. Joanne Bruce, 51, travelled from Cambridgeshire at 10.30pm on Monday night with her niece and sister, in the hope of thanking the team for their performance.

“We haven’t slept, we have just laughed and joked,” she said. “It was just the three of us to start with. My sister was like ‘I really want to go early’.”

She said other fans didn’t come “until about four o’clock this morning. We have now got a car parking ticket of £70-80, maybe more.”
