Bruno Guimaraes has lashed out on social media at some Newcastle fans for having “short, stupid memories.”

‌The Brazilian star bit back after an influential Toon account on X - formerly Twitter - wondered if it was time to “blame” individuals for their defeat at Manchester City.

While the huge majority of Newcastle fans have not criticised Guimaraes or Eddie Howe’s team and instead revelled in their rise to the top four over the last 18 months, Guimaraes was fuming at the tweet from fan account @nufc360, which has 134,000 followers.

Guimaraes used a sick emoji after they asked, alongside pictures of Guimaraes, Joelinton, Dan Burn and Miggy Almiron: “Is it too early in the season to start focusing blame onto individual players? Was there an overreaction to the loss to Man City?”

After beating Aston Villa 5-1 on the opening weekend, Newcastle lost 1-0 to Julian Alvarez’s goal on Saturday night. Guimaraes himself tweeted: “A tough match against one of the best teams in the world today, we know we can do much better and we will work to meet the expectations this season.”

But after seeing the tweet asking if players should be blamed, he hit back: “Support in the best moment is easy. Short, stupid memories you all have.

“Is this serious? We are in Champions League football, we lost against maybe one of the best teams in the world and we have a big win and lost one game! Look what we have done for the team in one year and a half.”

Guimaraes is in contract talks with Newcastle over an improved longer term deal but has admitted there is “doubt” while it goes unresolved. The Brazil international has been Howe’s outstanding player since joining the relegation threatened team in January last year. He has since been voted player of the year and said he wants to make his mark in the “history of the club like Alan Shearer.”

Guimaraes deleted the tweet, and is said to have unfollowed a number of fan accounts. He was inundated with messages from Geordie fans expressing their support and urged to keep “wearing his heart on his sleeve.”

Howe may wonder why his key midfielder was getting into a twitter spat with fans, rather than ignoring social media reaction.
