Man Utd urged to donate Greenwood fee to charity amid transfer interest

Manchester United have been urged to donate the funds from Mason Greenwood's potential transfer to domestic abuse charities.

It was announced on Monday that Greenwood will be leaving United, having been suspended by the club since his last appearance in January 2022. Teams from England and abroad have already registered their interest in signing the 21-year-old striker, who in February had charges of attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Valued at more than £100million before his arrest, United could opt to cash in Greenwood - who'll remain on full pay until his departure - before the summer transfer window closes on Friday, September 1. The once-capped England international has a contract with the Red Devils until 2025, with a club option of a further 12 months.

The Telegraph claim that United, who allegedly made a U-turn on plans to bring Greenwood back into the fold, will seek a loan deal with a view to a permanent transfer. Natalie Curtis, a survivor of domestic abuse who spoke to the Telegraph via Women's Aid, says that no club should be allowed to profit in the circumstances, despite Greenwood not being charged by police.

"It seems wrong that anyone should profit from the Mason Greenwood situation that has been horrific for survivors," Curtis affirmed. "If anything, if there is a transfer fee, it should be donated to a domestic abuse charity such as Women's Aid."

Greenwood has been most prominently tipped to join a club in Saudi Arabia or Turkey, but the Telegraph report that the Red Devils forward is believed to be more keen on a move to a top-tier European division. Sources stressed that the only guaranteed factor in Greenwood's decision-making process is that he won't be joining one of United's Premier League rivals.

United will assist Greenwood in getting his career back on track, as CEO Richard Arnold explained in an open letter to supporters. "Although we have decided that Mason will seek to rebuild his career away from Manchester United, that does not signal the end of this matter," Arnold, who's been criticised for reportedly planning to keep Greenwood at the club, wrote.

"The club will continue to offer its support both to the alleged victim and Mason to help them rebuild and move forward positively with their lives."
