The heart-rending testimonies by the families of the babies murdered by Lucy Letby brought home the true horror of her crimes.

The serial killer will spend the rest of her life behind bars but no punishment will be able to undo the grief and torment she has caused. She not only took the lives of innocent young children, she has ruined the lives of their loved ones. She then inflicted further pain by refusing to leave her cell for sentencing.

Rishi Sunak is promising to change the law to compel offenders who murder, rape or commit acts of terrorism to appear in court to face the consequences of their actions. The Government was urged to introduce such a law following the sentencing of Thomas Cashman earlier this year for the murder of Olivia Pratt-Korbel.

It was pointed out the legislation could be changed quickly by adding an amendment to the Victims and Prisoners Bill. The failure to take this opportunity is inexcusable.

If ministers had acted with due haste the law could have been in force by now, saving the families of Letby’s victims unnecessary pain.

Wealth divide

It tells you everything about the state of modern Britain that its top bosses are earning record amounts while millions of people cannot afford to heat their homes. The chief executives of the 100 leading firms enjoyed an average pay rise of £500,000 last year. While they were stuffing their pockets the majority of workers were having to make do with below inflation pay rises.

A Which? report shows 13million families were not able to heat their homes last winter. Britain is not a poor nation but it is a country where the wealth is no longer fairly distributed.
