Lioness goalkeeper Mary Earps has been supported by a host of famous faces as she shared her simple response to England's loss on Sunday.

The women's football team suffered a crushing 1-0 defeat against Spain in the Women's World Cup Final in Australia, despite goalkeeper Mary, 30, saving a penalty. Sharing a photo of herself looking deflated on the pitch followed by another with her silver medal, she captioned the post with just a heartbroken emoji.

However, the star was soon rallied by a number of celebrity football fans, who told the shot-stopper how "incredible" she was. Love Island's Sharon Gafka told Mary she was a "national treasure", Hollyoaks star Gemma Atkinson said she was "proud", former footballer Jermaine Jenas posted: "You are incredible" while journalist Victoria Derbyshire replied: "We love you."

England fell to defeat in their first-ever Women's World Cup Final in which Mary had the tournament of her life. The goalkeeper left fans delighted across the country with her rallying cry to her teammates after a superb penalty save in the 69th minute. However, it wasn't to be for the Lionesses as Spain won 1-0.

Mary looked bereft after the full-time whistle while her England teammates came from the bench to console her. The Manchester United star has helped the Lionesses numerous times with outstanding saves not just across this tournament but in every international game she has played.

The goalkeeper received the Golden Glove award for her part in the World Cup and was praised by former England goalkeeper David Seaman for her performance. He tweeted: “What a spectacular women’s World Cup and what a tournament @maryearps027 has had!! “SOOO proud of the #Lionesses.”

Coach Sarina Wiegman told the BBC post-match: "It feels bad now, what we have done, how we have shown ourselves, who we are, overcome so many challenges, I think we can be very proud of ourselves - even if it doesn't feel that way now."

Before the eagerly-awaited game Spice Girls Victoria Beckham, Geri Horner and Emma Bunton lead the celebrities sharing supportive messages to the England women's football team as they prepared to faced Spain.

Geri posted a video of herself wearing an England football shirt on her Instagram page as she told the camera: "Lionesses we are so proud of you. Sarina you are inspirational. Mary... Girls you've got this, best of luck," before blowing a kiss to the camera.

Meanwhile, the star's former bandmate Victoria Beckham, posted a video from the Lionesses' official Instagram page, declaring: "Let's go @lioneses!! History in the making and so inspiring! We're all so proud of you".
