Alejandro Garnacho could be set to start Manchester United’s match against Tottenham on the bench - if a tweet from his brother is to be believed.

United face Spurs in the Premier League in Saturday’s 5.30pm kick-off after opening their campaign with a 1-0 win over Wolves on Monday. Despite beginning their season with a win, the game at Old Trafford brought up some problems for Erik ten Hag to address.

Garnacho started the game on the left wing, with Mason Mount and Casemiro in midfield alongside Bruno Fernandes. Wolves constantly ripped through the heart of the United side and were unlucky not to score in the game.

Ten Hag is expected to take a more defensive approach to the Spurs game and Garnacho could be sacrificed for another holding midfielder. With that in mind, United fans have reacted with interest to a now-deleted post from Roberto Garnacho on X, which was previously called Twitter.

“If you all knew things that I know you would understand more about who starts and who do not [sic],” he wrote on Friday night before deleting. Three hours later he wrote: “These guys think I’m trying to get the attention or somma, I tweet what I think and I’m a kid as much people of here, everyone has mistakes, but I don’t think it’s needed, so I must be leaving Twitter."

If Ten Hag has indeed dropped the young winger, then he will be thinking along the same lines as Gary Neville. The former United full-back felt his old side were far too open against Wolves and called for Scott McTominay to replace Garnacho to help find some stability.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Should Erik ten Hag drop Alejandro Garnacho? Comment below.

“There were some signs in pre-season that with Bruno and Mount caught forward Casemiro could become exposed,” Neville wrote on X. “I think they will work hard on it Pre Spurs as that can’t happen again.”

A fan then asked: “Do you think Ten Hag will revert to a Bruno out wide in the big games once someone like Amrabat is signed or Mainoo comes back from injury?”

Neville then suggested Mount would be moved up top alongside Marcus Rashford and Antony, with McTominay deployed deeper next to Casemiro and Fernandes in front.

Whether he changes his personnel or not, Ten Hag will be expecting a much-improved performance in north London. “In possession, we were absolutely no good,” Ten Hag said of the Wolves game.

“The players made so many unforced errors, and it was very below our standards and what I am used to from my players and what my players are capable of. It can happen – it is the form of one day. I have already seen in pre-season they can do much better, I saw last season they can do much better, so I am sure they will improve quickly.”
