A couple who won £1million on the National Lottery have revealed what they splashed the cash on - including a miniature schnauzer.

Ruth Giblin, 45, and husband Rob, 49, scooped six figures on the Euromillions last year. And the first thing Ruth bought after the win was - and an eye test and some designer glasses.

The pair went on to pay off their mortgage, had a new kitchen fitted and started work on an extension at Ruth’s parents’ house. The couple from Telford, Shropshire, also enjoyed their first trip to London and Rob quitting his job as an engineer.

Ruth and Rob's children enjoyed their first flight on a holiday to Italy, and the family also bought their first dog - a miniature schnauzer called Rohan. Ruth, a leisure centre supervisor, said: “It has sunk in, sort of.

''I do still have some pinch myself moments and then some days I go back to the old days when we couldn’t afford much. I remember not wanting to pay for a gondola trip in Venice because it was €80. I could have afforded it, but it seemed a bit of a rip-off. I am quite a practical person, the first thing I bought was an eye test and glasses, having not been able to afford those before the win.”

Ruth said that she found out that she had won via the national lottery app. She added: “We got up early for a swim and I saw I had an email telling me I had good news about my ticket.

"When I logged into my account on the National Lottery app, it was telling me I had won £1million. When we spoke to Camelot, they confirmed we were millionaires! We were just stunned and started crying, before waking up the kids to tell them the news. We then went across the road to my parents to tell them, on what was Dad’s birthday.”

Rob said the winnings had meant the family, which previously had worried about money, now were able to able to extend his parents' house. He said: “Family is very important to us. The win has meant we are paying for an extension onto my parents’ house.

"My parents look after my sister who has additional needs, so an extension will mean everyone has more space. I can treat the kids and they can look forward to holidays like many other children their age, something we’ve never been able to do for them.

“I had the car serviced the other week. They called to say I needed some new tyres I just told them to carry on. Last year I would have been in bits. The relief the win has given us is amazing, this security feels so good.

“I am now looking at becoming a teaching assistant. I’m an engineer and love building stuff, so the thought of helping children make things in a DT class is very appealing. Without the win, I’d have had to continue in my job until I retired, never having tried anything else. Sometimes I have to pinch myself.”
