Wizz Air offers £9 flights to the Algarve for loyalty club members

Savvy holidaymakers can make big savings on flights to Portugal this year by signing up for a loyalty scheme that is slashing prices across Europe.

Frequent flyers can snap up flights for less than the cost of a sandwich at the airport simply by signing up to become a member of the Wizz Air Discount Club. The entry-level 'light' membership is free and provides members with coupons for low-cost deals and onboard benefits.

Members can save at least €10 on ticket fares from €19.99 and an additional €5 on checked-in 20kg or 32kg bags, as well as regular discounts and promotions.

Eagled-eyed adventurers have spotted some great deals to be had for members of the reward scheme with flights to Faro in Portugal available for just £8.99 one way on selected dates in October.

Perfect for an early Autumn getaway, Wizz Discount Club passengers can fly from London Gatwick to Faro for £8.99 on October, 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, and the basic price includes a free carry-on bag measuring no more than 40 x 30 x 20 cm and weighing less than 10kg.

Upgrades are available for passengers wanting to take larger-size hand luggage or checked bags or anyone wanting to pre-book their seat before they fly. Upgrade packages start from £62.63 per passenger.

Other incredibly low-cost fares available for Wizz Air Discount Club Lite members include one-way deals from Gatwick to Malaga for £12.99 on October, 26, Luton to Larnaca in Cyprus for £15.99 on September, 19 and Gatwick to Athens for £8.99 on September, 26.

Adventurers who expect to use Wizz Air on a regular basis could upgrade their membership to receive further benefits. Standard Membership for the account holder and one other is available for £34.99 a year, while the Group Membership offers deals for the account holder and up to five others for £69.99 per year.

In a bid to encourage Brits to take to the skies between now and the winter season, other budget airlines including easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair are also offering some cracking deals on destinations across Europe.

Some of the best we've seen available to book today include Luton to Faro for £14.99 in September and Stansted to Milan for £12.99 with Ryanair, also in September.

For cheap deals by the seaside, Love Holidays is offering last-minute getaways from £125 per person, while On The Beach is offering a selection of low-cost last-minute holidays to Turkey, Spain, Greece and other popular short-haul destinations.
