Klopp breaks silence after Liverpool agree 'unexpected' Caicedo transfer

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has confirmed the club has agreed a fee with Brighton for Moises Caicedo.

Klopp's side have leapt to front of the queue to sign Caicedo after hijacking Chelsea's deal with a British record £110m offer Chelsea had been considered the frontrunners for Caicedo's signature and placed a £100m offer themselves, only to be gazumped by Liverpool.

Brighton accepted Liverpool's proposal on Thursday evening and Caicedo is now set to hold talks with Klopp in an attempt to agree personal terms quickly. Caicedo is also expected to undergo a medical at the club's training ground, before signing a long-term contract at Anfield.

Speaking ahead of his side's trip to Chelsea on the opening weekend of the Premier League season, Klopp revealed the Reds had agreed a fee with Brighton for the Ecuador international. He said: "The fee with the club is agreed. We will see what that means.

"We aren't a club with endless resources and we didn't expect a couple of things to happen this summer. Then it happened."

Unless Caicedo is registered with Liverpool by 12pm on Friday afternoon, he will not be available to play in their clash at Stamford Bridge this weekend. The Reds face Bournemouth in their first home fixture next Saturday, which could be a possible debut date for Caicedo if the move goes through.

The 21-year-old would become the Reds' third signing of the summer and the second from Brighton after Alexis Mac Allister made the £35m switch earlier in the window. Dominik Szoboszlai has also made the £60m move from RB Leizpig as Klopp attempts to revamp his midfield department.

Liverpool saw Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Naby Keita and James Milner all leave at the end of their contracts in June, before Jordan Henderson and Fabinho both exited to join the Saudi Pro League. Arthur also returned to Juventus at the end of his disappointing season-long loan spell.

Caicedo's proposed move comes after the Reds saw three bids rejected to sign Romeo Lavia from Southampton. Chelsea are set to now move for the Belgium international, having lodged a £48m offer earlier this week. The Blues have also endured somewhat of a midfield overhaul after losing Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount among others in the summer window.
