Prince Harry and Meghan Markle will "leverage personal tragedies for their own gain" with their rumoured new film project, according to an expert.

The couple are said to have secured the film rights to the best-selling novel Meet Me at the Lake as part of their $112million (£87.7million) deal with Netflix. The book focuses on a couple who fall in love in their 30s and deals with themes of childhood trauma and post-natal depression.

One notable scene in the novel involves the death of a parent in a car crash. Harry was just 12 years old when his mother Princess Diana died in the same circumstances at the age of 36 in 1997.

PR expert Kieran Elsby has told The Mirror the Sussexes seem to be using their own past trauma to gain success. He said: "Author Carley Fortune delves into deeply emotional and sensitive topics within the pages of Meet Me at the Lake, such as childhood trauma, mental health struggles, and post-natal depression.

"While it's tempting to speculate that these themes align with the couple's public advocacy efforts, it's also fair to wonder if their involvement is more opportunistic than genuine. The presence of a plot point cantered around the death of a parent in a car crash might be a convenient parallel to Harry's personal experience, but it's also a stark reminder of how they leverage personal tragedies for their own gain."

Kieran pointed out how Meghan and Harry will be entering "uncharted waters" with the project, as it would be the first film they've produced together. The couple are said to have spent $3.8million (£3million) to secure the film rights.

The PR expert, director of Media PR Global, said it's a "staggering" amount of money for them to have spent. He added: "This raises suspicions about whether their involvement is the driving factor behind such a high valuation or if it's simply a reflection of the media frenzy that inevitably follows their every move."

Meet Me at the Lake contains some "steamy sex scenes" and "drug use", something Kieran said is surprising for Harry and Meghan. He said it's a "stark departure from the conservative image the couple once projected".

However, he suggested it could show the couple stepping further away from their roles in the Royal Family. The PR expert said they are now well and truly on their way to a Hollywood career.

Kieran added: "While they might continue to land on their feet, it's becoming increasingly clear that their path is marked by calculated decisions designed to keep them in the spotlight, regardless of the potential negative repercussions on their reputation and credibility."
