Liverpool have made a late bid to hijack Chelsea 's move for Moises Caicedo, making contact with Brighton over a move for the midfielder.

Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has been pushing to sign the midfielder for much of the summer, having seen Mateo Kovacic, N'Golo Kante and Mason Mount all leave Stamford Bridge. But it appears his bid to bring in the Ecuadorian has hit a bump in the road.

The Reds face Pochettino's side on Sunday in the opening game of the duo's Premier League season. And it seems that Jurgen Klopp is eager to get one up on their opponents before kick-off at Stamford Bridge.

Mirror Football understands that Liverpool chiefs have made contact with Brighton over a deal for Caicedo. The Blues have already had a number of offers for the 21-year-old rejected by the Seagulls, who are holding firm on their £100million valuation.

The Ecuadorian international has made it clear he wants to move to Stamford Bridge, even sitting out training earlier this week. The Reds meanwhile have been pushing for Southampton star Romeo Lavia, but have so far been unable to convince the Saints to sell.

Chelsea also offered a £48m fee for the former Manchester City star, though this was also turned down. Liverpool boss Klopp has been pushing hard to bring in midfield recuits after the double departure of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool will go to Brighton's hefty valuation of Caicedo though, having haggled with Southampton over the fee for Lavia for weeks.

The contact over Caicedo could ultimately help Brighton push up the price that Chelsea will have to pay, while also convincing Southampton to drop their valuation of Lavia. Liverpool and the Seagulls have a strong relationship at boardroom level after agreeing the deal that saw Alexis Mac Allister move to Anfield.

Speaking ahead of the opening day clash with Chelsea, Klopp said: "With the physical state I am really happy, we looked really fresh, looked really good - now, in the next five or six days, we have to find a formation for the Chelsea game, not for the whole season, and then we go from there.

"[Mac Allister] is a top-class player; on the ball, without the ball. We had our moments where we were a bit too open, that's clear, but we are not used to it. That's why I said we had to work on it. We will do that. We have to try it and test a couple of different things.

"There is some football stuff we have to do and maybe have to sort, definitely. But that's normal. The pre-season never ends after the first Premier League game. It always goes at least until the first international break.

"After that we should be then in a different position, that's clear. We have to use these full weeks without international football [which is] what we will do. We could, especially in Germany, train a lot on the physical part and on the tactical stuff and that's really helpful."
