Greenwood spotted in training with Man Utd set to announce decision on future

Mason Greenwood has been spotted training as he waits to hear what decision Manchester United have made on his future.

The forward, who has come through the ranks at Old Trafford, hasn't played since January last year when he was arrested for attempted rape, assault and coercive control. Those charges were dropped in February by the Crown Prosecution Service, but doubt has remained over his future in English football.

Greenwood, who has scored 35 goals for the Red Devils, has recently become a father and was at a public training ground going through shooting drills with his father watching on. United launched a five-month internal investigation after charges against Greenwood were dropped and a decision on their next course of action is now imminent.

The 21-year-old was dropped by Nike in light of the allegations and wasn't wearing boots from the renowned brand whilst he trained. Greenwood was first spotted training last June, his first public appearance.

A source previously told The Sun: “All the players believe he deserves a second chance because he’s innocent in the eyes of the law. He didn’t have the opportunity to clear his name in court because the charges were dropped, so the players feel like he has been left in limbo.

“They know it will be difficult but they are willing to support him through it, and protect him. Some of the younger players came through the academy with him so there’s a loyalty to him. They know he’s made mistakes but the lads who’ve spoken to him say he’s grown up a lot in the past 18 months and will come back a lot wiser.”

United manager Erik ten Hag confirmed that any decision will rest with the club. He said: "It's a club decision. Of course I have said my ideas and opinions but it's a club decision. We all have to accept that." The Dutchman also added: "I can't say so much about it. But what I say is I shared my opinion about it so let's see what's going to happen and what the decision will be."

Greenwood made his debut for United in March 2019 when they saw off PSG on a famous Champions League night. He was a regular in the following two seasons as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued to back the young forward, who scored 29 goals across his two most prolific campaigns.

The forward was first named in an England squad in 2020 before making his debut in the September against Iceland. He found himself in hot water, however, when he broke Covid guidelines and was released from the squad.
