Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has immediately fallen foul of new rules aimed at stamping dissent out of professional football.

Arteta was leading his Arsenal side as they took on Manchester City in the Community Shield on Sunday. It was the first time new rules had been implemented, with referees to take a harsh line against managers demanding yellow and red cards.

As the game passed the 17th minute mark, Arteta saw new Gunners signing Kai Havertz brought down by City midfielder Rodri. Referee Stuart Attwell awarded a free-kick, but Arteta immediately sprinted to fourth official John Brooks waving an imaginary card.

Attwell was brought over to the technical area and pulled out a yellow card which he showed to Arteta. The booking came after the FA implemented new rules to stamp out dissent from managers.

Officials now have the power to take strong action against anyone demanding bookings or screaming in the face of referees. Arsenal star Thomas Partey also fell foul of new rules outlawing kicking the ball away after a free-kick has been awarded.

The midfielder was booked by Attwell for doing so, as was City striker Julian Alvarez after he committed a similar offence. All teams have previously been warned about the updated guidance, which former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher hopes will have a positive impact.

"We have to have people behaving better. Everybody would agree it went too far last season. The one thing that was very evident was the amount of crowding the referees," Gallagher told Sky Sports.

"It reached a high. It's not about more yellow and red cards, it's about sending out a message of 'we don't want to do that'. So the only way we won't be able to do that is if you back off.

"I hope it's short-term pain for long-term gain because we don't want to see players in the stands suspended. But if it has to be, it has to be. That's what I hope, that's what the PGMOL hope and I think the stakeholders want the same."

There will be automatic yellow cards if there is ever more than one coach in the technical areas, while aggression from coaches will be met with a red card. If they are sent off, those officials will have to watch the rest of the game from the changing rooms, rather than the pitch.
