Brock Purdy's comments say everything about why he's San Francisco 49ers QB
Brock Purdy has explained why he is not afraid of suffering a re occurrence of his elbow injury after returning for the San Francisco 49ers.
The Niners quarterback has spent the last five months recovering from undergoing surgery on an elbow injury. Purdy sustained the injury during the NFC Championship game loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on January 29.
In March, Purdy underwent surgery on an ulnar collateral ligament injury, which went successfully. Months later, he is back taking part in pre-season training camp for the Niners.
With Purdy yet to play a competitive game since suffering the injury, there is doubt over who will be the Niners’ starting quarterback going into the 2023 NFL regular season. Purdy has Trey Lance and new signing Sam Darnold alongside him in the QB room and will be competing for the starting spot in the team.
Purdy has resumed practice in a bid to be ready for the Week One opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers on September 10. However, there were some concerns from head coach Kyle Shanahan during a practice session.

During one play, defensive lineman Clelin Ferrell tackled Purdy and hit his throwing arm in the process. But it seems that the thought of getting injured again is not on the mind of Purdy.
“I feel like as a coach, a teammate watching, yeah, they might be scared about that, especially how things ended last year with my arm,” Purdy told reporters in a press conference on Friday.
“But, honestly for myself, it’s just football. I wasn’t even thinking about it. He hit the ball out of my hand and I was going through to finish the throw and the ball ended up being on the ground. It’s football, you know?
“And so, was I mad at Clelin or anything like that? I told him, ‘Dude, it’s football. I get it. We’re in a competing environment. Things happen.’
“But for myself, was I scared about it? Was I timid after that? No.”
There are three pre-season friendly games for the Niners and Purdy to get themselves prepared for the start of the NFL. The Las Vegas Raiders, Denver Broncos and the Los Angeles Chargers will be the team’s opponents this month, with the regular season just a few weeks away.
Reaching the post-season and the play-offs will be the ambition for the Niners once again this season. Purdy stepped in to replace the injured Jimmy Garoppolo last year, and helped guide the team to the NFC Championship before Garoppolo left to sign with the Raiders.
