Gary Lineker has not pulled any punches over Harry Kane's potential move to Bayern Munich, urging the Spurs striker to pack his bags and head to Germany.

After a summer of cat and mouse between the two clubs, the Bundesliga champions raised the stakes on Friday, tabling a final offer of £86million plus add-ons. And they issued a midnight deadline for Daniel Levy and co to accept, with no confirmation as of yet as to whether Tottenham issued an official response.

Kane himself has remained tight-lipped on his future all summer, having also been linked with Real Madrid and Manchester United. But amid his crunch decision, fellow World Cup Golden Boot winner Lineker has been left in no doubt as to what he should do.

Speaking to , Lineker said: "I think Harry will leave Tottenham - and he should do. I think he wants to go and that they will make it happen. The time is right for him, and the right club has come in for him. Munich is a lovely city and Bayern are one of the great clubs in world football."

The views of the Match of the Day presenter will now doubt irk fans of his former club. But Lineker, 62, also argued that the sale made sense for all parties, with Kane's current contract set to expire in less than 12 months' time.

“It’s not just his goalscoring, but his assists, his all-round game and his leadership qualities," he added. "But when he is entering the last season of his contract, then for me it makes sense for Spurs to take £80m or £100m now rather than risk losing him for nothing."

Linker himself twice plied his trade abroad in his own distinguished career. He left Everton for a successful three year stint in Spain with Barcelona, and after joining Spurs later headed to Japan to finish his career with Grampus Eight.

Kane's burning desire to win trophies make Bayern an attractive proposition given their domestic dominance, winning 11 consecutive top flight titles. However, in the Premier League he is also bearing down on Alan Shearer's all-time goalscoring record, just 47 behind his total of 260.

Bayern have vowed to pursue other transfer targets if their offer is rejected. Thomas Tuchel's side are now just seven days away from their first competitive game of the 2023/24 season, the German Super Cup final against RB Leipzig.
