'The tragic reason why the law must be toughened to ban killer dogs'
Mauled to death by a seven-stone monster pet, nine-year-old Frankie MacRitchie is a tragic reason why the law must be toughened to ban killer dogs.
His heartbroken dad Billy say he did not stand a chance when he was left in a caravan with the American bulldog and Staffordshire bull terrier cross. Doing nothing is not an option when breeders, owners and, alas, some parents are fatally irresponsible, with children like Frankie paying the ultimate price.
Billy’s hope that no one in future suffers like him and his family will be in vain unless the law is urgently changed in the public interest. The vast majority of pet owners have nothing to fear and many support the clampdown, aware of the horror inflicted by a dangerous minority.
Let the terrible suffering of Frankie be a wake-up call, or other families will be mourning the violent loss of loved ones.
Kick up a stink
The fact swimmers are staying out of the sea this summer because of sewage leaks is a great shame. It will also come as a blow for seaside resorts, which rely on the school holidays for much of their annual income.

Nobody can blame the swimmers but we can hold the profit-thirsty privatised companies polluting our waters to account. Sewage spilled into Blue Flag areas a dismaying 1,504 times last year, and 43% of people are unlikely to visit beaches as a result.
Money talks for water companies ruining our great British beach holidays, so let’s hit them with huge fines and take them back into public ownership.
