At least eight dogs lost their lives due to heat-related injuries while being transported in the back of an uncooled cargo van through northern Indiana.

The incident occurred during a sweltering Midwest heat wave that has been plaguing the region for days. The van was carrying 18 shepherds, who were being transported from O'Hare International Airport in Chicago to a training facility in Michigan City, Indiana, ABC reported.

Unfortunately, the driver, whose name has not been disclosed by the authorities, was unaware of the air conditioning failure in the cargo area until he heard the distressed barking of the dogs. Acting quickly, he pulled off Interstate 94 at a convenience store and gas station in Lake Station, Indiana.

Upon opening the back of the van, the driver discovered that several dogs had already died due to the extreme heat. Passersby and store employees rushed to provide to try and help.

Jennifer Webber, the executive director of the Humane Society of Hobart, was among the first to respond to the emergency call at 7:40pm. She said that the dogs displayed signs of heatstroke, including heavy salivation and vomiting. .

She said: "There were already several dogs dead on the scene, and multiple failing fast. Their crates inside the truck were completely trashed on the inside and the little water bowls were the size you'd give a parrot. And they were empty and torn up as if the dogs were exasperated.”

The Lake Station Police Department issued a statement regarding the incident, describing it as a "freak event" resulting from a mechanical failure of the van's air conditioning unit in the cargo area. They emphasized that this was not an act of animal cruelty or neglect.

However, Jennifer Webber said her authorised attempt to conduct a thorough investigation was met with resistance. The police officer in charge of the scene allegedly brushed off her concerns, she claimed.

She also claimed that the driver was hostile behavior towards her and refused to produce health certificates for the dogs, which are typically required when transporting animals across state borders for commercial purposes.

The police allowed the owner to drive away, this time with the door to the cargo area left open, along with several deceased dogs. The surviving dogs were transported to veterinary hospitals in ambulances meant for humans, instead of the specialized humane society vans provided on-site.

In response to the situation, Jennifer Webber filed a notice of seizure for the dogs when they are discharged from the hospitals. According to Lake Station ordinance, the humane society is authorized to confine any dog that requires care or is reasonably believed to have been abused or neglected.

Jennifer alleges that the Lake Station police interfered with this process, instructing the hospitals to release the dogs back to the owner once they were deemed healthy again.
