Keeping on top of your fitness is important, and while gym memberships can be helpful for allowing you to try a variety of exercise routines, they're not suitable for everyone. Working out at home can be just as effective, and you can have the added benefit of being able to be comfortable and in private without the worry of people watching you exercise.

One woman thought she'd come up with the perfect solution to her workout worries when she invested in a treadmill so she could exercise whenever she wanted - but was instead met with an angry neighbour who told her the machine was too "noisy". The woman explained she put the treadmill in her garage so that it wouldn't make too much noise, but said that her garage space has flats above it, and the complaint she received was from the man who lives above her garage.

In a post on Mumsnet, she said: "I am trying to lose weight and bought a new treadmill which I have put in my garage. The garage is in a block and there are two flats above the block. I was running/walking on it and the neighbour from upstairs came down and said 'That's a very noisy machine you've got there'.

"The neighbours have lived there for about a year and we get on okay but this has made me feel really uncomfortable. It was during the day and I'd only been on it for about 15 minutes. I wouldn't plan to use it for more than half an hour a day. Surely if you buy a flat above garages you would realise there would be some noise? Just like I live in a terraced house, on one side the neighbours have a treadmill and they use it for about two hours a day (couple both very into fitness) and whilst it can be annoying I accept they are entitled to use a treadmill in their home.

"So should I just carry on using it, should I stop or should I just face him out and say I'm not going to stop running on it? Maybe ask if there is a specific time he would like me to avoid but other than that use my own treadmill in my own garage?"

Commenters on the post were firmly on the woman's side, with many of them insisting there was nothing wrong with her using her treadmill on her own property, especially since she only planned on doing so for half an hour a day.

One person wrote: "I would [keep using it], your fitness is important, especially as it's only half an hour a day," while another user posted: "Half an hour in the daytime is absolutely fine. Maybe reassure him that it won't be more than that?"

And even those who agreed that treadmills can be noisy told the woman not to stop exercising, with one writing: "I can see his point as treadmill noise would be really annoying, I mean those things are noisy! But for half an hour in the daytime, I think you're fine. It's just part of the parcel of living alongside people."
