Police have launched a murder probe after a woman was found dead in Plymouth yesterday.

Officers raced to a property in the city's Stonehouse area at around 4.15pm following reports of concern for a woman's welfare. Units forced entry to the address and emergency first aid was carried out, but a woman in her 50s was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by officers. A man in his 20s, from Plymouth, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in police custody. He is believed to be known to the woman, said Devon and Cornwall Police.

The force added that it is not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident, and there is "no wider risk" to the public. Pictures show a forensic tent erected at the scene today, with several police vehicles present. Locals have been told to expect officers to remain in the coming days as an investigation is carried out.

Force Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Superintendent Jon Bancroft said: “Following concerns reported to us about the welfare of a woman, officers gained entry to a property where she was sadly confirmed deceased. The deceased and the suspect are believed to be known to each other and I would like to reassure the public that there is no wider risk associated with this incident and we are not seeking anyone else.
