Casemiro remains convinced Manchester United are on the right path under Erik ten Hag and will build on last season’s progress.

United finished third last term, ensuring an immediate return to the Champions League, with Ten Hag also ending their six-year wait for a trophy, by winning the Carabao Cup. Ten Hag has strengthened his squad with the additions of midfielder Mason Mount and goalkeeper Andre Onana, with the club confident they will add a striker before the start of the new season.

Against that backdrop and with United’s improvement last season, Brazil midfielder Casemiro believes Ten Hag can lead the club to a new era of glory.

“I think we’re growing, I think we are evolving, right?” said Casemiro. "I think that always, when anyone speaks about Manchester United, the club is about winning

“The club always aspires to win things, but we know that we’re growing, that we’re embracing the ideas of the coach and I think we’re on the right path. What I want is that the club is in a good way, that the club is as high as possible.

“We won a trophy last year, we finished third and we played in another final. We have to continue evolving, because when we talk about individuals, it’s a little bit hard, because this is a team game. It’s a team with 11 and the key to winning a trophy is to have a good team with those players who come in.”

Although United are back in the Champions League, Casemiro said it was too soon to start thinking about Europe’s elite club competition, won by their local rivals Manchester City last season.

“I think it’s too early to talk about the Champions League,” said Casemiro. "We’re in pre-season still and we’re growing. No one likes to lose a game like we did, but these games are about getting rhythm, the sensations you have, working hard, fighting and keeping on growing as a team.”

Casemiro played for Real Madrid for nine seasons, winning five Champions League titles, but insisted there was no feeling of divided loyalties playing his former club. United lost 2-0 to Real in Houston on the latest leg of their US tour and Casemiro said: “Real Madrid, as everyone knows, is a club that I love very much.

“I played for them for a long time, but that’s in the past. Now I’m in Manchester, I’m very happy there and this was another important match for us in our pre-season. I have a lot of respect for Real, but when you enter the pitch, you have to fight for your own team.”
