Bruno Fernandes insists SEVEN Manchester United players enter the new season with a point to prove - namely £55million new boy Mason Mount.

New United skipper Fernandes played his part as United reached two cup finals in Erik ten Hag’s debut campaign - winning the Carabao Cup and losing to treble winners Man City in the FA Cup - as well as finishing third in the Premier League.

But the Red Devils finished some way off Pep Guardiola’s champions - 14 points - while they were nine behind second place Arsenal.

Ten Hag has made a number of notable changes this Summer, including ditching David de Gea for Andre Onana - despite the Spaniard winning the Premier League’s golden glove last term - and signing England midfielder Mount.

Quizzed on Mount’s arrival and what he can bring to United, Fernandes stated that he believes his new teammate has a point to prove following his Chelsea exit - but also that Mount isn’t the only one.

“He [Mount] has a point to prove, like everyone else,” said the Portugal international, having played in United's 2-0 loss to Real Madrid in Houston on Wednesday night.

“I have a point to prove. So does Licha [Lisandro Martinez], Casemiro, Rapha [Varane], Andre [Onana], Harry [Maguire] and Victor [Lindelof].

“It’s not about him [Mount]. He doesn’t have to prove anything more than anyone else.”

Asked about Mount specifically, Fernandes added that he is expecting the 24-year-old to play a key role in bridging the gap to those above.

“He has goals and assists in him,” continued Fernandes. “He can create chances, so we are expecting a lot from him. But he’s aware of that.

“He’s at a big club and he knows the expectations on him will be big.”

Fernandes' comments on Mount came after boss Ten Hag admitted that he is aware his side need to be better in front of goal, believing that Mount can help them to improve - with or without a new No.9.

The Dutchman said: “We're underperforming [in terms of scoring goals] and we're aware of it.

"But others have to contribute in that area and, in Mason Mount, we have a player capable of scoring goals, to put Rashford into the position to score more goals and, as a team, we have to score more.”
